“Jesus at the Center”

I heard this song for the first time last Sunday. Oh, how it resonates with me.

In this year for me of One Word 2013: Jesus, this song says it all.

So you can imagine how excited I was that at my first choir practice Thursday night with new (to me) fellow believers, we worshiped with this song in preparation for Easter services. The Lord is so good.

I pray you enjoy worshiping through it, too.

Jesus at the Center

Do you have a one word for the year?

When I see it I am speechless

Have you ever seen his grace so powerfully that it took your breath away?

If not, watch for it. It’s real.

He’s real.

LYRICS

Unending but always on time
Unfailing but never unkind
Unmerited favor is mine
Undeserving oh but I receive

CHORUS:
Your grace Lord Your grace
Oh I need it I receive it
I'm amazed so amazed
When I see it I am speechless
You take my breath away
You take my breath away

Unending but always on time
Unfailing but never unkind
Unmerited favor is mine
Undeserving oh but I receive Your, I receive

CHORUS

And You breathe life into me
I'm nothing without You
Without grace where would I be
I'm nowhere without You
[x2]

I'm nowhere without You

Your grace, Your grace, Your grace

CHORUS

And You breathe life into me
I'm nothing without You
Without grace where would I be
I'm nowhere without You

'Cause You take my breath away
You take my breath away
'Cause You take my breath away

Grace – Tenth Avenue North

I’m really enjoying Tenth Avenue North’s latest CD, The Struggle. This song about grace is one of my favorites:

Grace, only grace
Can roll your dead heart’s stone away
Grace, only grace
Can move us to a rhythm that will change our ways

Grace-by-Tenth-Avenue-North

Grace
Tenth Avenue North
LYRICS

Oh can you hear, hear mercy sing
She cries to bitter hearts, end your suffering
Oh, please let go, give up your fight
Holding back your love, it never made things right
It’s gonna be okay, okay tonight

CHORUS:
Grace, only grace
Can roll your dead heart’s stone away
Grace, only grace
Can move us to a rhythm that will change our ways

Oh listen to love and let pride hit the ground
If joy is the armor it can’t be broken down
But if hate is the fuel no one will win
When we love ‘til we're empty that’s where life begins

CHORUS

Grace, grace, come and move me
Oh come and move me now
Grace, grace, only you can lift up what holds me down

CHORUS

Come move me to that rhythm and come change my name

Day 20 of . . .

31-Days-of-Grace_LisaNotes

New grace every morning

We are still alive because the LORD'S faithful love never ends.

Every morning he shows it in new ways! You are so very true and loyal!
Lamentations 3:22-23 (ERV)

Do you ever think you’re starting to know God, but then he surprises you yet again? And again? And again?

He’s doing that with me a lot this year.

This is one of my new favorite songs about God and his grace.
His grace is new every morning, yes?

The First Time by Mercy Me

The First Time
MercyMe
LYRICS

Day after day I try to explain You
Like I can contain You in so many words
But You are the ocean and I'm on the shoreline
Thinking I know You like You could be learned

It's so amazing that You'd ever save me

CHORUS
I thought I knew Your face
I thought I’d tasted grace
But I have never felt anything close to this
Just when I'd seen it all
New mercy breaks the dawn
And with my eyes open wide
It feels like the first time, first time
It feels like the first time, first time

After all of my searching, all of my reaching
I'm left with nothing, nothing of worth
You treasure the broken over and over
Give me a hope that could never be earned

It's still amazing that You'd ever save me

CHORUS

Your beauty no eye has seen
Your majesty overwhelming
Your love for me is healing oh God

I thought I knew Your face
I thought I’d tasted grace
But it was nothing like this
Just when I’d seen it all
New mercy breaks the dawn
And with my eyes open wide
I feel alive for the first time, first time
Just like the first time, first time
I can see for the first time, first time
It’s just like the first time

Day 13 of . . .

31-Days-of-Grace_LisaNotes

“I Saw the Lord”

We sang this song Wednesday night before we had a lesson on prayer and took the Lord’s Supper. I’ve been listening to it ever since.

You Are Holy
(I Saw the Lord)
LYRICS

I saw the Lord seated on the throne
And He’s clothed in glory and exalted high
And the train of His robe filled the temple
And the angels gathered round Him and cried

CHORUS:
You are holy, Oh so holy
You are holy Lord of all

Woe is me for I’m unclean
But my eyes have seen the Holy King
And He cleanses my lips right before my eyes
And the pillars shook as the angels cried

CHORUS

* * *

“Heaven help me”

This is the prayer I prayed most frequently in El Salvador:

“Lord, help me, help me, help me, help me.”

Yeah, real mature, I know. But it’s what little girls are prone to say to their daddies when they’re in over their heads.

. . . More on that later.

For now, enjoy these lyrics by Matt Maher.

Heaven Help Me
Matt Maher
LYRICS

I don't wanna live tomorrow
For another rainy day
I don't wanna say I'm sorry
If I can avoid the pain
I don't wanna gain the whole world
Just to turn and lose it all
’Cause when it's time to jump I don't wanna guess
If You'll gonna help break the fall
If there's any hope around

CHORUS:
Heaven help me now
Heaven help me now
I lift You up and I lay me down
Heaven help me now

I don't wanna sing Your praises
Just to hear 'em on the radio
I don't wanna stand for justice
If I'm not among the poor
I don't wanna claim to know You
If your name's not on my heart
’Cause when it's time to go I don't wanna look back
Just to see I was playin' a part
If there's any hope around

CHORUS

Everybody's quoting the bible
Like it could be truth or lies
And I'm standing on the corner
With the saints and the sinners
Tryin' to quote Your love
With my life

CHORUS

* * *

What prayer do you frequently pray?

I want to live like that

Are you love
When no one else will show up

Are you Jesus to the least of us
Is your worship more than just a song?

I want to answer, “Yes!” And sometimes I do.

But sometimes it’s a “Maybe” at best. And sometimes a solid “No.”

As I get ready to leave for El Salvador:

  • I want this song “Live like That” ringing in my ears.
  • I want to give it all I have there.
  • I want what I say and do to point to Jesus.
  • I want to live recklessly abandoned because his love is true.

And when I get back home, I want the same.
To live like that.

Live Like That
Sidewalk Prophets
LYRICS

Sometimes I think
What will people say of me
When I'm only just a memory
When I'm home where my soul belongs

Was I love
When no one else would show up
Was I Jesus to the least of us
Was my worship more than just a song

CHORUS:
I want to live like that
And give it all I have
So that everything I say and do
Points to You
If love is who I am
Then this is where I'll stand
Recklessly abandoned
Never holding back
I want to live like that
I want to live like that

Am I proof
That You are who you say You are
That grace can really change a heart
Do I live like Your love is true

People pass
And even if they don't know my name
Is there evidence that I've been changed
When they see me, do they see You

CHORUS

I want to show the world the love You gave for me
I'm longing for the world to know the glory of the King

CHORUS

* * *

How will you show the world today God is who he says he is?

Who is it for?

Why do you . . .

  • Do laundry?
  • Buy the wedding gift?
  • Drive across town for lunch?
  • Respond to the text?
  • Water the plants?
  • Get to work on time?
  • Pray with your kids?
  • Bite your tongue?
  • Check your email?
  • Put down your book?
  • Pick up your book?
  • Take a shower?
  • Kiss your husband?
  • Write a blog post?

All for Him?

Um, not all. Not yet.
But it’s the goal...

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17

All for You
Mikeschair
LYRICS

This time, this place is set apart
I stand amazed at who You are
I'm overcome by what You've done
Oh

I'm here right now, I need You now
I lift Your name above the doubt
This is my offering for You
For You

CHORUS:
'Cause it's all for You, all for You
Every heart will proclaim
Every tongue will shout Your praise
All for You, oh, oh, oh
All for You, oh, oh, oh

I leave my burden at Your feet
In You I find my victory
There is nothing You can't do
Oh

I'll live my life for your renown
I'll give it all and lay it down
'Cause I owe everything to You
To You

CHORUS

All will hear, all will see
Love came down and we are free
All will hear, all will see
Love came down and we are free

CHORUS

* * *

Offering it all to him.
I’m still working on that.
     You, too?

Great I AM

Sunday morning the church started in on this song. Softly. Thoughtfully.

I wanna be close
Close to Your side

But as the words built, and an awareness of the presence of God rose, so did the volume in the room.

Who is worthy
None beside Thee
God Almighty

And by the time we hit the bridge, you knew you weren’t alone as a believer in this building. Voices filled with passion and arms lifted high and hearts knelt at the power of the Great I AM, the only one who can make a house of dry bones live again.

There is no power in hell
Or any who can stand
Before the power and the presence of the Great I AM

I love this song.
I love this Name.
I love this God.

May you be drawn into worshiping Him, too.

I wanna be near near to your heart
Loving the world hating the dark
I want to see dry bones living again

“Ready or Not”

When you think you need to be somebody you’re not, remember instead to be who God made you to be.

I love this anthem by Britt Nicole to let your light shine, whether the world approves or not.

God made you like he did on purpose. Let him shine through.
Be you. Be real. Ready or not.

Ready Or Not
Britt Nicole featuring
Lecrae
LYRICS

I tried to cover my shine
I've tried staying in the lines
I don't wanna hide
No not tonight
You want me to take my light
Fit it in your box right
I want you to look me in the eye

CHORUS:
Ready or not
Here here here I come
Imma ‘bout to show you where the light comes from
Oh ready or not here here I come
This is who I am
I won’t hide it
Imma take it all over the world
To the young to the old every boy and girl
Ready or not here I come
Imma show the world where the love is

I'm not ever selling out
A love out loud is what it's all about
Giving everything to see the lost get found
Yeah, it's going down
You want me to take my light
Fit it in your box right
I want you to look me in the eye

CHORUS

[LECRAE]
I refuse to keep this buried deep inside of me
Yeah this lil’ light of mine it's time to let it shine a bit
'Cause there's no point in hiding it
It's everything I am
The source of all my hope
And it's the reason why I stand
And I pledge allegiance to be somebody real
There's no more holding it back
I'm showing them how I feel cuz love is more than a word
It's a noun and a verb and hiding it is absurd
Ya heard

CHORUS

It is finished

This phrase—“It is finished”—keeps resurfacing for me. (I’m caught up / At the Cross) It’s a theme I can’t tire of.

Once and for all, Christ completed the work.
What peace that should give us!

There’s nothing more we can add, or should add, or are able to add to what Jesus already did. It’s done.

Accept it. Receive it. Rejoice in it!

It Is Finished
Matt Papa
LYRICS

Once and for all
Once and for all
You offered up Your life
For one and all
For one and all
The perfect sacrifice
Atoning blood was shed
Love conquered when You said...

CHORUS:
It is finished
It is done
To the world salvation comes
Hallelujah we're alive!
Hell was silenced when You cried:
It is finished
It is finished

Who is this King
Who is this King
So mighty and so strong
He is the one
He is the one
The earth has waited for
God's remedy for sin
With mercy for all men

CHORUS

The earth shook and trembled
The sun bowed its head
The veil of the temple was open for men
As Jesus went down in the cold of the grave
Defeated the darkness when He overcame
The keys of the Kingdom were placed into hands
Of children and priests and of fishers of men
Through all generations His voice will be heard
Creation resounds the victorious words

CHORUS

It is finished
It is done
Now completed the work of Love
Hallelujah He's alive
Join the song of the ransomed Bride
It is finished
It is finished
It is finished!

* * *

Aren’t you also glad it is finished?

At the Cross...I know He loves me

When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
John 19:30

He did it.
He finished what He came to do.

Because of that, even when I fail Him...
I know He loves me.
I know He loves me.

AT THE CROSS
LYRICS

Oh Lord You've searched me
You know my way
Even when I fail You
I know You love me

Your holy presence
Surrounding me
In every season
I know You love me
I know You love me

CHORUS
At the cross I bow my knee
Where Your blood was shed for me
There's no greater love than this
You have overcome the grave
Your glory fills the highest place
What can separate me now?

You go before me
You shield my way
Your hand upholds me
I know You love me

CHORUS

You tore the veil
You made a way
When You said that it is done

And when the earth fades
Falls from my eyes
And You stand before me
I know You love me
I know You love me

CHORUS

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

“Courageous”...to touch Him

Jesus-heals-bleeding-womanAs I study the woman who bled for twelve years (Luke 8:43-48), I’m amazed at the courage she showed.

She already had two major strikes against her before she even touched Jesus: culturally, she was not to be in public as an unaccompanied female; and religiously, she was considered unclean and thus prohibited from milling about the general public.

But what she did next was also daring—she reached out to touch a man without his implied consent. And not just any man—the God-man.

Her courageous initiative paid off.

Jesus’s power not only healed her, he affirmed her faith, called her “Daughter”, and sent her off in peace (Luke 8:48).

One lesson?

(There are many.) Jesus is ready for ushe rewards us for reaching out for him. Even if all we dare is connecting a fingertip to the edge of his clothes. His power is more than enough to take it from there.

This song is from the movie Courageous. While the outer message is primarily for men, the implied message is for everyone:

You were made for so much more
Let the pounding of our hearts cry
We will serve the Lord

...
The only way we'll ever stand
Is on our knees with lifted hands
Make us courageous
Lord make us courageous

May we all use courage to lift our hands to touch the Savior, however that works for each of us.

We have his consent; he is more than available.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Hebrews 11:6

Courageous--Casting Crowns

Courageous
Casting Crowns
LYRICS

We were made to be courageous
We were made to lead the way
We could be the generation
That finally breaks the chains

We were made to be courageous
We were made to be courageous

We were warriors on the front lines
Standing unafraid
But now we're watchers on the sidelines
While our families slip away

Where are you men of courage?
You were made for so much more
Let the pounding of our hearts cry
We will serve the Lord

CHORUS:
We were made to be courageous
And we're taking back the fight
We were made to be courageous
And it starts with us tonight
The only way we'll ever stand
Is on our knees with lifted hands
Make us courageous
Lord make us courageous

This is our resolution
Our answer to the call
We will love our wives and children
And refuse to let them fall

We will reignite the passion
That we buried deep inside
May the watchers become warriors
Let the men of God arise

CHORUS

Seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your God
Seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your God

In the war of the mind I will make my stand
In the battle of the heart and the battle of the hand
In the war of the mind I will make my stand
In the battle of the heart, in the battle of the hands

CHORUS

One Pure and Holy Passion

This is one of the songs I’ve been listening to hard this week. It fits perfectly with my focus for Lent.

As I try to do one thing at a time—even though I’m failing a lot—I’m reminded to focus on the One I’m doing it for. Jesus is the One I seek to know and follow hard after.

One Pure and Holy Passion
Sung by Candi Pearson
LYRICS

Give me one pure and holy passion
Give me one magnificent obsession
Give me one glorious ambition for my life
To know and follow hard after You

[Repeat]

To know and follow hard after You
To grow as Your disciple in Your truth
This world is empty, pale, and poor
Compared to knowing You, my Lord
Lead me on and I will run after You
Lead me on and I will run after You

Thanks for those who prayed for my sweet home Alabama again today as more tornadoes rolled through. I had no damage, but just a few miles from my house was much loss. My heart cries for those who lost homes that were barely rebuilt from the tornado damage last April.

Lay it down

kneel_at_the_cross_fullHave you had to lay anything down lately?

My heart has been heavy this week about giving up something precious to me (perhaps only temporarily?) because I can no longer participate in it in good conscious.

I don’t want to let it go. But I want to stand for what’s right.

So I lay it down.

As God would have it, my daily Bible reading has had me in the gospel accounts of Jesus’ last hours on earth. Oh my.

Anything I lay down is nothing compared to what He laid down for me.

And because He did, I can make my sacrifice (albeit still reluctantly) knowing that anything done for His glory has already been paid for.

Matt Maher elaborates on his songLay It Down”:

How amazing it is that when we lay down our lives for God what He gives us is infinitely greater than what we’ve had to sacrifice.

...We lay it down and we celebrate what God has given us. So the laying down isn’t that depressing because what we receive is so much greater.

So I lay my gift at the altar, and I celebrate that He will provide what I need next to show His glory, even though I can’t see it yet.

And I hope.

I’ve been memorizing Romans 8:24-29 the past three weeks, not realizing the specific blessing I would need from them now. Thank you, Father, for laying out gifts before me so I can lay mine down later with more ease. And pick up more of yours. You always outgive me.

24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?
25  But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
27  And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
29  For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Everything I am
Everything I long to be
I lay it down at Your feet

Everything I am
Everything I long to be
I lay it down at Your feet

I lay it down
I lay it down
I lay it down
At Your feet

Oh pearl of greatest price
No act of sacrifice
Can match the gift of life I find within Your gaze
Oh what a sweet exchange
I die to rise again
Lifted up from the grave into Your hands of grace

When things change too fast

IMG_2592Sometimes life changes too quickly.

So you let things sit while you catch up.

I’ve let the box sit in our bedroom for a long time. 1½ years. Jeff never complained, even though it had to be in his way.

I hadn’t planned on going through it this week. But it happened. It held records of hospital visits and oxygen levels and medication lists. Papers from hospice on how to prepare for death. Newspaper clippings and notebooks and even steno pads from the 1950s of my mom’s shorthand notes.

And my mom’s jewelry box.

I gingerly handled the pieces that had been on her fingers, around her neck, on her wrist. All when she was breathing, caring, loving down here. Jewelry that wasn’t worth much in money, but was worth much in memories.

After Daddy died on Valentine’s Day, we took turns staying 24/7 with Mama. Her Alzheimer’s was already too progressed for her to stay alone.

But she hated it. Hated it with a passion. My sweet, non-confrontational mother would tell us we were treating her like a baby. That she wanted us all to go home and leave her alone. That she didn’t need us there.

She didn’t want this change.

So we’d hide out in the living room for awhile. Or disappear into a back bedroom. Or take a walk outside. Give Mama her space. Let her feel independent. But not leave her alone.

Because things had changed. She had changed. We had to change, too.

I have to change still.

I can’t keep my mama’s jewelry and doctor reports and high school notes in a box front and center by my dresser anymore.

So I make a small pile of jewelry to keep, to wear, to remember my mama who loved me and whom I still love. I put it all in a pink cloth jewelry case that Mama had used. IMG_2593

I place the remaining pieces back in her jewelry box and set it in a bag by the front door. I will pass it back to my sisters and they can decide what happens to it next.

Life changes.
I’m still catching up.
But God never changes.
I’m forever holding on.

And hold on to God.

Everything Moves But You
Christa Wells

When I was a child, I held to my mother tightly
Then I grew taller and left to follow my dreams
I went after my dreams, and some of them brought me delight
But they didn’t bring me everything I hoped they might

I fell into love like a skydiver in the clouds
It wasn’t enough, no, we couldn’t sustain it ourselves

CHORUS:
All the things I pursue
Well they stay for a season
Then everything moves
Everything moves, oh
My towers fall
But you aren’t leaving me
‘Cause everything moves but you

I trained my body to run and not be weary
I worked and I read how to raise a better family
Then I bought a good house on the safe side of town because I could
And as long as my life stays like this I’m feeling good

Until my bones become brittle against my will
My heart is home, oh, to make the earth stand still

CHORUS

You…I never outgrow you

You are a tree always in bloom
You are a hall of endless rooms
A living fountain springing up
I’m satisfied but never done
I’m never done
With you

“Just as I Am”—it’s the only way you can come

One beauty of the Christian faith is you don’t have to clean yourself up to come. Actually, you CAN’T clean yourself up before you come.

Either you allow Christ to clean you up, or you stay messy.

Just as you are. That’s how you’re to come.

This hymn is old.
This chorus is new.
This message is timeless.

What will you unwrap on Christmas?

What do you expect to unwrap on Christmas?
I’ve been told I’ll be surprised. I’m sure I will be.

I like anticipating good gifts. I like looking forward to an expected treasure.

But I like remembering past gifts, too. The best ones follow me into the present.

The gift of Jesus is one of those forever gifts.
Look forward to receiving more of Him to come.
Look backward in gratitude of what He’s already given.

Then delight in the moment for the very gift He is—right now.

Three wiseman seeking Truth they traveled from afar
Hoping to find the Child from heaven
Falling on their knees they bow before the humble Prince of Peace

CHORUS:
We bring an offering of worship to our King
No one on earth deserves the praises that we sing
Jesus may you receive the honor that You're due
O Lord I bring an offering to You

The sun cannot compare to the glory of Your love
There is no shadow in Your presence
No mortal man would dare to stand before Your throne
Before the Holy One of heaven
It's only by Your blood
It's only through Your mercy
Lord, I come

CHORUS

We bring an offering to you
We are an offering to you
We are an offering to you, Jesus

We are an offering of worship to our King
No one on earth deserves the praises that we sing
Jesus, may you receive the honor that You're due
O Lord, we bring an offering to You

What’s one of your favorite Christmas songs?

“Speak O Lord”

Although the Lord speaks to us everyday, He speaks to us on Sundays through multiple voices—those who have prepared all week (ideally) to share His Word specifically with us.

Are we preparing to hear it?

Read the lyrics below to “Speak O Lord.” It was written by two of our greater modern-day hymn writers, Stuart Townend and Keith Getty (also composed “The Power of the Cross” and “In Christ Alone”).

Think again about His speaking and your receiving this Sunday:

  • before you sit still to listen to your pastor’s sermon, or
  • before you teach a Bible class, or
  • before your participate in worship through song, or
  • before you encourage an old friend or meet a new one.

There are many ways to hear God’s Word.

And many ways to respond to it. This song speaks in rich biblical language to both the hearing and the doing.

May we be changed by hearing the Lord speak.

LYRICS

Speak O Lord as we come to You
To receive the food of Your Holy Word
Take Your truth plant it deep in us
Shape and fashion us in Your likeness
That the light of Christ might be seen today
In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak O Lord and fulfill in us
All Your purposes for Your glory

Teach us Lord full obedience
Holy reverence true humility
Test our thoughts and our attitudes
In the radiance of Your purity
Cause our faith to rise cause our eyes to see
Your majestic love and authority
Words of power that can never fail
Let their truth prevail over unbelief

Speak O Lord and renew our minds
Help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us
Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
That will echo down through eternity
And by grace we'll stand on Your promises
And by faith we'll walk as You walk with us
Speak O Lord till Your church is built
And the earth is filled with Your glory

How can we better prepare to hear the Word of the Lord?
How are we changed by the hearing?
