Why I want to memorize 1 Peter 1

1-Peter-1.cloud

Beginning August 19, I want to start memorizing 1 Peter 1.

Why? Hiding-1-Peter-1

Here are five reasons:

1. Because . . .
Peter calls me to be confident and persevere in Christ even through trials; good things are coming!

2. Because . . .
I’m going to be studying Peter’s faith anyway in September with Kathy at Do Not Depart on Unshakable Faith

3. Because . . .
it will encourage me to live more full of love for others and more holy for the glory of Jesus Christ

4. Because . . .
if I start now, I’ll have this hidden safely in my heart before the hectic Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons start

5. Because . . .
Peter reminds me my hope in grace came at a cost; it was Jesus’ blood that redeemed me

Because of all these reasons and more, I want to memorize 1 Peter 1.

Though you have not seen him, you love him.
Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
1 Peter 1:8-9

More details here.

If you’d like to memorize it, too, register at Do Not Depart.

Thanks, Nikki. My big event of the weekend is dropping my youngest daughter off at college. Now I'll have more time to memorize. :-)
What a worthwhile 'project'. We have so much to learn about God's enduring love for us through Peter and his journey. (2 Peter 1:3 forever changed me) So grateful His Word endures forever. Blessings to you.

I totally agree with you on 2 Pet 1. That whole chapter has been a positive influence on me. So much to learn from Peter and others who followed Jesus so closely. So thankful we have these letters!

Going to read this chapter now. I've never been good at memorization. I can remember the gist of some passages, but I have the hardest time recalling location & knowing it by detail. Had the most wonderful lunch with your amazing daughter today!

I'm not so hot at memorizing either, Amy. ;-) And I've been put to shame for years compared to Jenna's memory. I'll miss having her to memorize with this year.

I'm SO thrilled that Jenna is getting to spend time with you. Truly a blessing. She was very excited about your lunch together and is looking forward to taking pictures together sometimes. Can't wait to see those when it happens! Thanks for loving on my girl. Makes a mama feel much better. :-)

I've been feeling a nagging tug to memorize greater chunks of scripture- to go beyond the "feel good verse". Your post is yet another "tug" or "push". Thanks for setting the bar high and inviting us to jump! Praying for you, too, as you step into a new season of life- I know God has this season dreamed out for you, too. Exciting and new :) Blessings, friend.

I love when God uses repetitious reminders to push us into something we've been wondering about. Jump in; the water is warm. :-)

Thanks for your prayers, Alicia, for my new season. It's going to be different but I rest knowing that "God has this season dreamed out for me." A beautiful blessing.

I love 1 Peter 1! In the fall of 2009, during a season of transition, I studied 1 Peter and drew my memory work from there. Every time chapter 1 comes around in my review again, it pours hope back into me. Little did I know when I started studying that book that it may have been God's preparation for all that has come since then. The living takes a lot longer than the memorizing.

May the Lord use it to comfort and strengthen you in your transitions too.

Wow. How encouraging this news is, Christina. I'm so glad you shared this with me; I didn't know how important 1 Peter has been in your life. I'll look forward to memorizing it even more now. And look forward to how God can use it in ways I can't imagine.

Yes, I love Skype. It's so great to do more than just text or talk; to actually see faces and expressions makes it *almost* like being there.

I'm in Lisa! I've studied the chapter inside and out but have not memorized it. This will be my largest chunk!

So pleased that you'll be memorizing with us, Kathy! I know you'll have lots of good insights to share. Looking forward to gleaning from your in-depth studies on faith.

This sounds very interesting...I will consider joining. Two verses a week sounds doable. I've always liked the book of 1Peter.
May you be enriched as you take the challenge.
Blessings.

Sounds like some very good reasons! I'm still working on memorizing James and the process has been such a blessing. What a gift to hide the Word in my heart.

It definitely is a gift to hide the Word in our hearts. I memorized James 1 awhile back; it's one that actually stuck! But I never got past that. Memorizing doesn't come easily to me, but is always worth it when I try. I'm glad you're being blessed through James.

Thank you so much for your post. I suffer from memory issues and I am praying that starting this with some others will help. I definitely want to hide Gods word in my heart. I am a minister and have been in church my whole life. Love it when some one starts reading or I am doing my devotions and Gods word just jumps out!!!

Blessings,

I love when that happens too, Kim. Once we have a scripture memorized, we're so much more likely to take it personally.

I pray that this challenge will be a positive thing to help with your memory issues. I admire your determination and faith.
My recent post Peace, O soul. Be still.
