Truth mirror

I don’t like these truths, but I’m afraid they’re valid.

  • Is it easier for me to see your faults or mine?
       Yours.
  • Is it easier for me to blame others or blame me?
       Others.
  • Is it easier to pass the responsibility or take it?
       Pass it.

That’s why I need you.
Will you be my mirror?

Macky preached it well today. [LISTEN HERE] He said to listen to our truth mirrors: God’s Word. Spouses. Roommates. Brothers and sisters in Christ.

Remember the story of David’s sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:1-4)? And Nathan’s conviction (2 Sam 12:1-13)?

Stop asking:
How could David do such a thing?

Start asking:
How could I do such a thing (whatever that “thing” is you’re doing)?

Be grateful for mirrors like Nathan.

And let’s be willing to repent like David when we see who we really are.

Macky also showed this video. Please watch.

If I hadn't had to run out early today at church, I would have taken the chance to thank you in person for being a faithful 'mirror' in my life! So this provided the perfect opportunity to tell you. :) It's NEVER easy to be the 'Nathan' in a relationship, but I'm grateful that you have been willing to be that for me. Love you! :)

I'm sure I'm not a very clear mirror. I'm thinking of those crazy mirrors that you see at the fair that really distort the way you look. ;-) Macky didn't address those today. ha. But I appreciate what you're saying here; thank you for your patience with me.

Loved this post. Very true, it's easier to see that speck in someone else, rather than the plank in your own eye. I have a few mirrors in my life, and I am very grateful for that!

We looked at that verse today too, about still needing to help our brother get the speck out of his eye, but not before we take care of the log out of our own. Having had an eye injury in my past, the pain I felt was enough to drop me to my knees and not think about anyone else anyway. ha.

What a blessing that you have those mirrors in your life too. We all need them.

Truth mirror -- what a neat way of thinking about it. Too often we want to deflect or explain away what they show us without really looking up close and trying to fix what's wrong -- opposite of what we dd with physical mirrors.

In the video, when one lady didn't like what she saw in one mirror, she finally pulled out another mirror for a different view. That's always a possibility for us too. It's sometimes painful to look at ourselves head-on.

HI Lisa
I found your blog through the Hear It, Use It community and really appreciate this reminder about how often I neglect to look inward but how easy it is to be critical of others. I appreciate the video and sermon links too.

I think it just comes so naturally to look at others and see their faults. Kids seem born knowing how to point their fingers and blame others. But thankfully, by the grace of God, we can slowly but surely look for the log in our own eyes first.

I have a mirror. Sometimes I want to smash her, but I do realize how good she is for me. :)

I have mirrors I want to smash too, Jen. And unfortunately it's sometimes the one very closest to me. But I thank God for his honesty with me anyway. :-)

I admit, I have a rampant self-righteous streak. I was thinking about the plank/speck verse as I read your honest post -- and I see others have been reminded of that here as well.

I think most of us(all?) have that streak, Michelle. It's amazing that the only Man who could have legitimately been haughty about actually succeeding at righteousness, took the humble approach. Oh, to be more like Him...

So very true. I pray that every time I judge someone else, I see the same faults in me too.

A great prayer to make. They say we're usually repelled in others by the faults we have in ourselves. I don't think that is always true, but a lot of times it is. It should be enough to help us hold our tongues and show mercy.
