Fall Reading List 2011

Fall into Reading 2011

What do you want to read this fall?
Do you read more if you have a plan?

I’ve made a list for the next three months, but I’m afraid it’s quite unreasonable. Instead of underestimating to ensure success, I’m going big this time.

Here’s why.

Reading together

What-Women-Fear-by-Angie-SmithWhat Women Fear: Walking in Faith that Transforms (11/20/11)
By: Angie Smith
Jenna and I fell in love with Angie Smith at the Women of Faith weekend. So we will read this one together as part of our school days, and also with the community at (in)courage. It’s their book club selection with Angie leading. It’s not too late to get the book and join in!

The-Cross-of-Christ-by-John-StottThe Cross of Christ (10/30/11)
By: John R. W. Stott
Whatever Tim Challies picks out for his Reading Classics Together group is always good. I read things with the group there that I wouldn’t read on my own. I always benefit. We’re on chapter 7 this week so at least I have a head start.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness (10/31/11)
By: Ellen J. Langer
This is a splurge read-along.
I’m so easily distracted so when I saw this book surface as a read-along at The High Calling with Laura Boggess (who also writes for a beautiful blog of her own), I had to join in. It starts Monday. Do I need to be reading with another book group? No. But it’ll be good.

All-InAll In: What It Takes to Be the Best (12/11/11)
By: Gene Chizik
Our friend Willie gave this one to Jeff.
So if Jeff gets to read it, I should get to also, right? Right. War Eagle.

Reading to supplement a study

The-Faith-of-LeapThe Faith of Leap: Embracing a Theology of Risk, Adventure & Courage (12/9/11)
By: Michael Frost & Alan Hirsch
Since this is the year of Depend and Delight for me, this one fits right in.

The-Practice-of-the-Presence-of-GodThe Practice of the Presence of God (10/7/11)
By: Brother Lawrence
Again. It’s one of my top 10 life-changing books.
This is to go along with Mindfulness (see above). Because I’ve read it multiple times already, I know it will be a perfect companion book.

Reading just for fun

Harry-Potter-and-the-Chamber-of-SecretsHarry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (10/8/11)
By: J. K. Rowling
I read the first one a month ago and it didn’t blow me away (sorry, fans). But I hear the books get better, so I’m going to read one more, just to see.

Reading because I bought them

Doing-Life-DifferentlyDoing Life Differently: The Art of Living with Imagination
By:
Luci Swindoll
In a weak moment, I bought several books by authors/speakers at the Women of Faith conference (Jenna wanted the “free” purse they came in; I caved). But they all looked great, so it’s okay. These are three of those books.

Stumbling-into-Grace

Stumbling into Grace: Discover God’s Story in the Middle of Your Own
By:
Lisa Harper
She’s funny yet insightful in her talks, so I’m guessing her books will be the same. Jenna read and it said it was good.

The-Shelter-of-God's-Promises

The Shelter of God’s Promises
By: Sheila Walsh
She blew me away with her talks. And I can’t get enough lately of hearing about God’s promises.

Reading because Ed gave it to me

Tortured-for-ChristTortured for Christ (12/9/11)
By: Richard Wurmbrand, founder of The Voice of the Martyrs
My friend Ed makes sure we don’t forget about persecuted Christians worldwide. I’m glad, even though it’s a painful thought.

Reading because I finally have them!

Practicing-AffirmationPracticing Affirmation
By: Sam Crabtree
Words are my love language. I hope this book will help me use them better for the glory of God.

Spiritual-DepressionSpiritual Depression (10/25/11)
By: Martyn Lloyd-Jones
It’s not about “depression” as we typically define it. It’s about keeping our joy in the Lord. I’m already almost halfway and it’s as fantastic as I’ve heard.

a million miles in a thousand years donald millerA Million Miles in a Thousand Years: How I Learned to Live a Better Story (12/1/11)
By: Donald Miller
I haven’t read any Donald Miller in awhile; I’m due. My sister Sandy is loaning me this one.

Reading for review

enemies-of-the-heartEnemies of the Heart: Breaking Free from the Four Emotions that Control You (10/25/11)
By: Andy Stanley
I typically like what Andy Stanley has to say, so we’ll see.

mysterySuggestions?
Now that I’ve finished Bonhoeffer, I can pick another freebie from BookSneeze. If you’ve read a good one lately, let me know!

UPDATE:
I decided on Going Deep (11/4/11) by Gordon MacDonald. And have also added the third Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (10/10/11). And picked up The Last Sin-Eater (10/20/11) by Francine Rivers at the library because I’ve been wanting to read it anyway, and well, there it was.

And newer additions:

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (11/26/11)

The Unwavering Resolve of Jonathan Edwards (11/28/11)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking

Finding Noel

Unveiling the Kings of Israel (12/9/11)

What’s the worst that can happen with a crazy list like this?
I just don’t finish.
That’s okay. There’s always winter....

What book have you been wanting to read?
If you need suggestions, see more lists at Fall into Reading 2011.

I read all of the Harry Potter books. My favorite is HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban. You have a long and excellent list. I wish I had time to read more.

Hazel,
So to get to that Harry Potter book I’d still have one more to go. (Is that what’s going to happen to me? Always one more to go? Ha.)

I get most of my reading done between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. I wouldn’t recommend that to you though as a way to find more time to read. I’m just a poor sleeper…

Great list. I have 25 books on my list - a combo of review books and books that will help me complete the other reading challenges I signed up for this year.

I loved the entire Harry Potter series and have been thinking of rereading them all - but maybe via audio.

Good luck!!!

Awesome list, Lisa! The only ones I've read are Harry Potter (loved them) and Practicing Affirmation (very good!), and all the rest of your books have me zipping over to Amazon to check them out. I've never heard of Mindfulness, bu it looks really interesting. And What Women Fear is popping up all over the place -- I know I'll be reading that before long!

Thanks for being part of FIR '11. Enjoy your ambitious list!

Yes, the "reading just one more" Harry Potter is what got me hooked.

You'll see some familiar titles on my list that will hopefully never show up on my blog again--hahaha!

Wow, some pretty hefty reading there, Lisa! You put my non-fiction reading to shame. LOL. I'll have to look for that practicing affirmation book at the book store. It really caught my eye off your list.

I thought I had read Practicing the Presence of God, but I don't think I have. I did read Tortured and Spiritual Depression years ago.

Words are not my love language, though they do minister to me. But I need to learn to be more affirming.

Like your ending -- if we don't finish, winter is coming!

Great list, looks like you are going to be very busy reading - never a bad thing! As for Harry Potter, I will agree that I think the books get better as the series goes. Each book I found was a bit better written and more complex - presumably so that the kids reading it can grow and expand their reading horizons as they read? I'll be looking forward to seeing how you like book 2!

Love your list and spend a delightful time exploring many of them and adding them to my list. You had such a great variety of readings here.

I too am a late comer to Harry Potter and read all of them this summer. Even got my husband hooked on them so was fun reading them together. I love the imaginative world she created.

Thanks for all a great suggestions.

I was just about to fire up my Kindle and start reading Mindfulness but decided to check Twitter on last time. Glad I did. I love book lists! I downloaded Bonhoeffer (I think at your suggestion). I want to get my hand on Grace for the Good Girl by Emily Freeman because I've read rave reviews around blogworld. Also just finished With by Skye Jethani and Rumors of Water by LL Barkat, both of which I recommend highly. I'm thinking about reading the original Grimm's Fairy Tales just for fun, because I never have (because they're way too scary for young children)

Wonderful list. I am also going to Amazon to check out most of your titles. I have to be careful though b/c Amazon one click and I are quite good friends!

The Fall into Reading 2011 challenge is the first one I've ever been a part of. It appears that you belong to several. I will check those out.

As always, Love your list! I am going to be reading What Women Fear too (forgot to add that one to my list) and will be checking on the Mindfulness book too. Thanks!
I agree with The Practice of the Presence of God being a must read!I really liked Practicing Affirmation and am interested in what you think of Spiritual Depression!

Looks like a great list of books. The Cross of Christ sounds good.
I have to agree that the HP books get better as you go. I really did like book 1 when I first read it, but now, when I go back to reread it after reading all the others, I really don't like it anymore. #3 Prisoner of Azkaban used to be my favorite, then when #5 The Order of the Phoenix came out I fell in love with that one. But I think my favorite now is the final book. What is important to me in the HP books is the theme of self sacrifice.

Great list. My mom gave me Tortured for Christ. It is one of the hundreds sitting on my shelf for me to read.

Great list! So many interesting books.

Wow. Your list is so challenging to me. I want to remember to re-visit it once I make some headway on my own. Happy Reading!

Wow! Ambitious list there! Lots of deep thinking, and I would be tempted to just curl up with the HP books and enjoy (i.e. escape, esp in that 10pm to 7 am time frame, chuckle). I'm also jealous that you've finished Bonhoeffer. I find the man fascinating and the biography extremely well-written, yet I keep setting it down in favor of other books. It's on my list for this fall though! ;)
