Hey Lisa! We love The Mysterious Benedict Society. We have all three books. They were all equally good. We got the first one because Davis had swimmer's ear and when I put the drops in that had to stay in for 20 minutes or so, he needed entertainment. I read out loud. It totally saved the summer for us. The author is an Arkansan and he came to our library because one of his friends from college worked in the library. He did a special session for budding authors and then a general one for the rest of us folks. He signed the 2nd and 3rd books for us and of course I got a picture. I haven't read any of his adult fiction but it might be worth a try. I just finished Evidence Not Seen and loved it too. You're right, it makes Ireland look like a cake walk.
Morning, Lisa!
I just finished The Mysterious Benedict Society last night! Loved it. It's one I bought for Audrey, hoping ot entice her to love reading (it KILLS me that I have children who do not love to read--obviously it's not a genetic thing or they would).
They do love books on tape and being read to, though. But there's something about escaping into a book all by yourself that they just don't get.
Maybe now that I read it, she will.
Love seeing all you read--thanks. I've read and loved the Puritans because of you. ;)
Happy New Year!
Joanne
Wow. You have a great list! In the President’s Secret Service looks like it will be an interesting read.
Happy reading!
I keep meaning to get to the Benedict Society and keep forgetting.
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Chan's books. I've never read anything of his but I have read quotes and excerpts that were thought-provoking and convicting. I almost picked that book up a few weeks ago at the bookstore but decided to wait and go through some others that have been stacked up for a while.
Denise,
How fun that you met the author of Benedict…. I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m going to get Jenna to read it next; I think she’ll like it too. Glad you loved Evidence Not Seen. I guess I can’t complain about our cold weather to you. :-) Looks like your family had a nice Christmas in Ireland. So glad.
Joanne,
I remember when I thought my youngest wasn’t going to be a reader. It killed me. ha. But she finally changed so keep hoping for Audrey too. (Although Jenna tends to read the SAME books over and over and over…)
I’m so glad you’ve been reading the Puritans too. I never knew what a treasure trove they would be!
Cassandra,
I don’t know exactly why, but I love books about the Secret Service and FBI, etc, behind the scenes stuff. I’ve learned all kinds of interesting tidbits with this book already.
Barbara,
I waited until the Benedict Society became available at the library. I listened to Crazy Love by Francis Chan a couple years back and really, really liked his message, but I knew I didn’t absorb it as much as if I’d read it. Then last week a friend bought a couple copies to give away and gave one to me. So now I get to read it after all. I also read his “Forgotten God” about the Holy Spirit; it was good, too, but I think Crazy Love is probably better to me.
I've been wanting to read Benedict but haven't gotten to it yet. My girl isn't a reader, either...but really got interested in The Hunger Games when they read it in school, so we gave her the trilogy for Christmas. I want to read those, too.
You'll have to let me know about the secret service book. My library has it, and I'm thinking of reading it if you think it's good.
Sounds like a great month ahead!
I loved Benedict and Shallows. So many others on your list sound good, but I haven't read them. Thanks for sharing your list!
I enjoyed In the President's Secret Service when I listened to it earlier this year. You know already that there are MANY fans of The Mysterious Benedict Society--I definitely fall in that category. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the rest of those--they sound intriguing.
I've had Crazy Love on my list forever...I need to get to it soon! I loved Trusting God. And I just finished Coffee Shop Conversations after reading about it on your other post. :-) Good book!
Yay! Yay! Yay! She has Mysterious Benedict Society on her list!
And I have Crazy Love on mine as well.
Looks like we have similar tastes in books and I have read or have on my wish list many on your lists!
Enjoy your reading,
Amy @ Missional Mama
I love Chan's books and sermons. Actually one of the reason we are in the process of downsizing is because of his book Crazy Love. I am presently (as in today) painting some rooms in a condo we have moved to....we have our cottage up for sale.
I haven't heard of the Benedict society. I have read some of Jerry Bridges books , but not the one you have mentioned.
Carrie got me to read MBS, and I was bowled over. LOVED it. So did my ten year old, and we ate up all three books. So much fun!

I just got Switch from the library because I liked their Made to Stick so much. Maybe we can have a two-person book club on it. :)
Murray's Humility was pivotal in my walk with Christ. I first read it in 2007.
A friend gave me Worship Matters for my birthday a year ago. I need to open that! Bob Kauflin's blog was the first blog I ever read regularly.
I'm re-reading Jean Fleming's The Homesick Heart---something I dip into pretty regularly.
A friend just introduced me to John Donne's poetry. Wow.
I always seem to be reading something by Katherine Paterson. My 6-year-old just got Beverly Cleary's Dear Mr. Henshaw as a gift. I think I'll re-read that, too.
Great list you've got there!
Monica,
Yes, I wanted to read Switch because I LOVE Made to Stick too. And Switch, so far, is just as good. I’m definitely in the club. :-)
Glad to hear Humility had a long-term effect on you; I pray it will do the same for me. I plan to review it during this year as I study more on humility. I’ve ordered C.J.Mahaney’s book on it.
You do need to open Worship Matters! I really benefited from it, and from reading his blog too. We have very similar tastes. So I’m adding The Homesick Heart to my reading list.
