Evening—Corner View

* * *

Evening brings darkness.

Would you have liked the pre-electricity days, when darkness was more readily associated with bedtime? While candles and lanterns permitted some activities to continue, it certainly wasn’t with our ease of flipping a light switch.

We’re more prepared for the dark.

Before I go to bed, I prepare for any middle-of-the night awakenings. I make sure my mp3 is on my nightstand, loaded with something positive.

Lately I’m listening to the audiobook of Desiring God by John Piper. I’ve read it twice but was ready for a refresher, so when it became the free audio download-of-the-month in November at Christian Audio, I decided to “read” it again this easy way. (This month’s free audio download is an abridged version of Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky.)

Bedstand

I also keep a stack of real books by my lamp for late-night or early-morning reading. (And the past year, my reading glasses with them.) Primal by Mark Batterson is getting the most attention this week.

In my car, I keep a LightWedge for nighttime travel reading. It’s the best book light I’ve ever had (and I’ve tried many). It lays flat, keeping the LED light focused where you want it, on the bulk of your page, not spreading out elsewhere.

Lightwedge

On my Christmas list is a USB LED light for my laptop so I can see the keyboard if I’m working on something in the dark when we’re traveling in the car.

I’m glad that evening doesn’t necessarily mean total darkness. A little light can go a long way and do a lot of good.

I don’t always prepare for or act in the dark like I want to (Matthew 5:16). Sometimes I allow the darkest evening hours to bring out worst-case scenarios in my imagination.

But I know I don’t have to be scared of the dark. I know Who can banish it.

And he always leaves a light on for me.

Jesus spoke to them, saying,
I the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,
but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Love this line: "he always leaves a light on for me." Great image.

Lovely post and thanks for sharing the scriptures.
You are prepared for middle of the night awakenings. My son is the reason why I have middle of the night awakenings.

I just bought my first pair of reading glasses last month. I felt so incredibly old. Of course some college kid checked my out; she didn't get it. The sobriety of the moment was lost on her.

G,
The college girl won't understand until she needs reading glasses, too. ;-) It was a big moment for me when I had to get a pair. Now I'm thinking I already need an upgrade (it's been 2 years?). Oh well. I definitely want to keep my vision.
