Wondrous Words Wednesdays

Wondrous Words Wednesday Three new words I learned this week from various places:

1. métier
Usage
—(from an anacrostic): “Barbara Walter’s métier _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ” *

Definition—(n) [MET-ee-ay]
a profession or trade; one’s specialty

* Answer: interviews

2. Nostrum
Usage
—from The Divine Conspiracy: “Our longing for goodness and rightness and acceptance makes us cling to bumper slogans, body graffiti, and gift shop nostrums that in our profound upside-downness somehow seem deep but in fact make no sense.”

Definition—(n) [NOS-truhm]
1. a quack medicine
2. a favorite but untested remedy for problems or evils

3. bupkis
Usage—from USA Today: “Physical textbooks are often resold as used books, so publishers get bupkis.”

I feel like I should have known metier since it's probably French, but all of those words are new to me. (A verbal sally is a witty or imaginative saying.) Thanks for participating today!

Métier I knew (since I speak French) as well as bupkis (although I'm not sure I've ever seen it written down before), but nostrums is a new one to me!
