Wondrous Words Wednesdays

Wondrous Words Wednesday These 4 words came from N.T. Wright’s book Surprised by Hope but I could have made a much longer list of words he used that I didn’t quite get. And sentences. And paragraphs.

Some words I’d heard of, and even looked up numerous times, but still didn’t feel quite sure about. So here is just a sprinkling. Maybe this time I’ll remember them?

1. recondite
Usage
—“It has two aspects, a street-level one and a more recondite one.”

Definition—(adj) [rek-uh n-dahyt]
Not easily understood; concealed; hidden.

2. esoteric
Usage
—“Every step back from that is a step toward an ethereal or esoteric Easter experience, and the thing about Easter is that it is neither ethereal nor esoteric.”

Definition—(adj) [es-uh-ter-ik]
understood by only a small number of people, esp. because they have special knowledge

3. stultify
Usage
—“This, I think, stems from a kind of latent Protestantism in Western Christian culture, an implicit belief that buildings, liturgies, and so on are in their very nature unspiritual, uninspiring, and stultifying and that the less we have of them, the better.”

Definition—(v) [stuhl-tuh-fahy]
to render useless or ineffectual; to cause to appear foolish

4. staid
Usage
—“Some people, discovering the joy of new life in Christ for themselves, have gladly abandoned all that they now regard as boring, staid, and even unspiritual.”

Definition—(adj) [steyd]
characterized by sedate dignity; fixed or settled; serious or rather dull.
