What’s on your nightstand? June ‘12

I am loving my summer books!

Just a quick update about the new stuff since I posted my spring reading wrap-up only last week.

Just started

52-lies-heard-in-church-steve-mcvey52 Lies Heard in Church Every Sunday: And Why the Truth Is So Much Better
   Steve McVey
Look out for this one! I’m on Lie 18, and already this book may make my Top 12 Books in 2012 (although I’d prefer eliminating this from the title “…Heard in Church Every Sunday” because it’s lies we believe about spirituality in general, not just church). Very gospel-oriented, i.e. grace-filled, about finding our sufficiency in Jesus, not ourselves.

Stopping-Stress-Before-It-Stops-You-Kevin-LemanStopping Stress before It Stops You
   Dr. Kevin Leman
Yeah, so I’ve been feeling stressed lately. This one has been a freebie on my Kindle for awhile. So now’s the time. Is it helping yet? Maybe a little. :-)

The-Blue-Parakeet-Scot-McKnightThe Blue Parakeet: Rethinking How You Read the Bible
   Scot McKnight
I’ve had this on my list for a few years. Finally quit waiting on the public library to get it, and just bought it. A good investment so far!

Hell-a-Final-Word-Edward-FudgeHell: A Final Word
   Edward Fudge
I read his much longer book The Fire that Consumes a few years back and was forced to take a new look at scriptures about hell. This new book comes out concurrent with an independent film on Fudge, “Hell and Mr. Fudge,” which I’d like to see, especially since he’s from my neck of the woods—on several levels.

through-painted-desertsThrough Painted Deserts
   Donald Miller
It’s one of his earlier books. I’m not liking it as much as some of his later works, but that’s okay (I tend to skim details about scenery anyway, just so you know).

Hidden Life of Prayer-david-mcintyreThe Hidden Life of Prayer
   David McIntyre
Reading this with Challie’s Reading Classics Together. It’s not ground-breaking, but it does encourage me to pray more often so that in itself is good.

Still reading

Holiness-day-by-dayHoliness Day by Day: Transformational thoughts for your spiritual journey

(I’m about halfway through this year-long devotional, so I’ll drop it off the monthly list for now.)

An autobiography by the blind American Idol top 8 finalist in 2009. A very good book!

Ditto. I pulled a couple books off your list this morning myself--the two you said you enjoyed the most. :) My library actually has both of them. Score.

I can relate on the stress front! Sounds like you have a lot of deep thought going on in your reading lately. Great list. ;)

I need to add some light-heartedness in there somewhere, yes? ha. I'm looking for a fun novel; that's good for when we're stressed, too. :)

I am ALWAYS amazed at your reading list. YOU are an avid reader...Inspiring and Convicting me! ~ that first title is one to stop me in my tracks..certainly draws up my curiosity... I appreciate your reviews on so many books. I always know WHERE to come if I want to learn or ask about a title. :-) ;-) Hugs to you and have a NON-stressful day Lisa!!! xoxo

I do love to read. I was laughing at myself this morning though because most of my reading is before 8 a.m. and after 10 p.m. But I always have a book with me in the car, or my purse, just in case I can grab a few extra minutes somewhere! ha. They add up.
I think I have commented on some of these in previous posts. Scott's book sounds really good.

So many reading lists lately, huh? :) I almost hated to post this one, but I like keeping up myself with what I read.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who reads four books at one time! My husband always teases me about this but it really depends on my mood what I want to read. I would look forward to hearing what you think of Scott MacIntyre's book. He comes from Scottsdale, AZ and has done free concerts here; very talented.

I am reading:

A Place of Healing: Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain, and God's Sovereignty by Joni Eareckson Tada

Beginning at the End (Finding God When Your World Falls Apart) by Cherie Hill

Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World by Michael Hyatt

The Weapon of Prayer - Enhanced Version by E.M. Bounds

Happy reading Lisa!

Blessings and love,
Debbie

Scott did mention Arizona a lot in his book. His faith is very inspirational. He's overcome so much (blindness is one of those things I pray the Lord keeps away from me). I need to buy one of Scott's CDs now so I can hear more of his music.

I listened to "A Place of Healing" a few months ago on audio. Joni E.Tada is another inspirational person! What a life and faith. Hope you enjoy it and that you're getting settled back into your new home.

As always - I love your list.

And that's quite an advertisement for 52 Lies Heard in Church. Favorite of 2012?! Hmmm! Gonna have to look into that one!

Yeah, I went out on a limb with that recommendation BEFORE I even finish the book. I reserve the right to retract it if the book gets weird at the end. ha.
Wow! You have a lot "deep" challenging books on your stand. I am going through a fiction phase right now. no non-fiction at all. several of these I would like to add to my TBR list. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them!
1 reply · active 673 weeks ago
But much of your fiction is historical fiction, so that sorta counts as non-fiction. :) I liked your list. I don't even have a novel lined up yet, so I want to pick one out.
The 52 Lies book sounds interesting-I'll have to check it out. I am interested to hear your thoughts on "Churched." I Haven't read it, but I have a love/distaste for MPT- either really love what he says or am like, "really?..." but that was mostly from his blog.

I enjoyed "Churched"--it was basically like a novel. He was just telling stories from his childhood, with very little commentary. Of course as an adult, you can read into why he chose the stories he did; there was definitely satire in it, but it made me think, so I liked that. I had not even heard of MPT before so I had no preconception going in. Sometimes that makes things easier; sometimes not. ha.

Great list! I still am tackling the same list I have been on for a couple months now. It's been busy and I am moving slowly!

I understand that. I was shocked when I compiled my list to see how many books I actually completed. That won't be happening again soon. ha.

I'm very impressed by your titles. I didn't think much of "The Blue Parakeet" when I first heard about it, but that could have been a knee-jerk reaction to what I assumed it was about. I'm curious to know how it goes.

I really love the "Nightstand" link. I've been able to find a LOT of really good suggestions since I started doing it.

I'm not very far into The Blue Parakeet, but what I've read so far has been amazing. I'd heard about it for a few years too but didn't really know what it was about. I'll try to do a review on it when I finish (may be awhile though! ha).

Yes, the Nightstand meme is one of my very favorites. I get so many good ideas of what to read next and what NOT to read next, which is equally valuable. :)

I am always amazed by how much you read - i really must read more.
