He sees you when you’re sleeping

eyes-of-santaAre your kids sleeping with one eye open this week?
Watching for Santa watching them?

It’s no different for some adults.

Do you know this song?

All along on the road to the soul’s true abode,
There’s an Eye watching you;
Every step that you take this great eye is awake,
There’s an Eye watching you.

Watching you, watching you,
Ev’ry day mind the course you pursue;
Watching you, watching you,
There’s an all-seeing Eye watching you.

When I was growing up, Mrs. M would sit on the pew behind us at church. We sometimes wondered if she was the all-seeing eye. We felt her glare. It made us nervous.

I had to shake that.

I’ve grown up now to discover that while yes, God is watching me, it’s not to wag a finger at me if I giggle with my girlfriends during the sermon. Or get grouchy with Jeff. Or lie awake at night wondering about tomorrow.

He’s watching me so he can help me. Protect me. Love me.

And save me.

Jesus came, with his two sweet baby eyes, to watch over us and save us and lead us to praise.

And because he’s watching, we can calmly close both our eyes each silent night and sleep in heavenly peace

I like this song much better:

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

* * *

How does it makes you feel knowing that God is watching you?

I was just telling another friend yesterday that after an outburst of temper while at home alone, I tended to think it was ok since no one else saw me and it didn't harm my testimony or provide a bad example. But I was convicted by the fact that God did see me as well as "principalities and powers in heavenly places' (Eph. 3:10) who are observing what God's interaction with us teaches them about Him. But I am so thankful He doesn't watch us like a frowning Dickensian schoolmaster, waiting to pounce on us for the least infraction, but like a loving heavenly Father who wants to save us not just from the penalty of sin but from sin itself.

And the thought of God never sleeping has been a comfort many a night as I go to sleep.

So much comfort, such relief. It's an amazing, too-big-to-absorb truth that makes every day different when I keep it on my mind!
I'm just relieved for His forgiveness... The perfect God watching a sinful fallen creation. Man-that's love. I'm grateful beyond words or expression that He is watching and is still loving and willing to take me home.

I love that song too...

yes! I see this in how I see my children too. I watch them, and am in charge of correcting when it is necessary...but there are moments when they say something a little off, or a little temper flares, and I do not interfer. In fact, part of me just smiles. They are human, and God knows this of us better than I know this of my own. Merry Christmas!

This reminds me of the time my teen girlfriends and I were caught laughing in church. What the deacon didn't know was that we had happened upon the Song of Solomon and were laughing at all the unusual terminology! haha! But I love your thoughts here, Lisa. I'm so glad my Savior watches over me with love and not a wagging finger! Merry Christmas!

it can be pretty intimidating to think that god is always watching...and hard to love one that always looks down on you...flipping that lens is crucial in our developemt because he wants to love and be loved...have a very merry christmas!
There's such a deep difference between watching critically and watching in love, isn't there? That's grace!
i love this post. i was thinking about that song this week, about how it reminds me of God, seeing me when we're sleeping and awake, and i'd much rather God be watching me than santa claus any day :) love to you lisa. have a beautiful christmas. xo

"And because he’s watching, we can calmly close both our eyes each silent night and sleep in heavenly peace." I love that! I love that you have grown to see His watching in a warmer, fuller light--it truly should comfort us to know He's watching, not intimidate us. It should obviously make us think about what we're doing, knowing it's all with Him in the room, but so we want to please Him, not because we're afraid He disapproves of us. Merry Christmas Lisa!

Love your words!! I think having God watching me is like looking up and seeing the cutest boy in school looking at you. It seems a little too good to be true, to get that kind of attention.
My recent post two places
The thought of Him watching over me has brought me much comfort this past year. And it also comforted me to know the same God watching over me was also watching over my husband while He was on the other side of the world, and now my son who is now on the other side of the world.
Merry Christmas to you, Lisa.
xoxo
Isn't it refreshing to feel comfort that he's watching over us, instead of anxious? I'm so glad you were comforted this year knowing that God was watching over your husband and son just as much as he was watching over you. We are blessed. Thank you, Beth.
