Why do you do what you do?

In our opinion, most people write about spiritual disciplines as though they are ends in themselves.
~MICHAEL FROST, ALAN HIRSCH, The Faith of Leap

I think about this kind of stuff.
A lot.

Why do we do what we do?
What’s our bottom line?
I need to know before I sign up.

While it’s not necessarily wrong to do things just for themselves,
wouldn’t it be better to do them with a purpose?

And isn’t that purpose for the glory of God? Isn’t that why we’re here?

Is there any good thing we do that couldn’t be done for the glory of God?

Eating. Cooking. Sleeping. Loving. Building. Reading. Writing. Playing. Praying. Cleaning. Serving. Taking. Laughing. Surfing. Studying. Talking. Creating. Resting. Receiving. Giving. Guiding. Teaching. Learning. Confessing. Celebrating. Thinking. Worshiping.

For his glory.
Is it too much to ask from us?

Think about it.
A lot.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do,
do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

And whatever you do, in word or deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:17

I hope you're having a good weekend, too, Nikki. I've been blessed in mine.

As I have grown and aged, I see more and more things aligning and falling into the "do" for His glory, to be called His. I think it is almost like gathering chicks in a basket - it's a continual work and a continual gathering. I love how you wrote this - this call to doing for God!

A continual work and gathering...yes! Thank you. I am slow to remember--it's about him, always about him. There's joy in the remembering.

I agree, if what we do is not about the will of our Father, nothing good for us can come of it.

OK... Surfing? You always like to throw in a curve ball don't you?

Ha. I throw in the things that trip me up. Now you know. :-)

That's so true -- often we start spiritual disciplines for good reasons, but then they become habit and we end up doing them for their own sake, and they often feel empty then. We need constant reminders or adjustments to why we do what we do.

I can fall into "habit only" so easily because I'm so drawn to routine. I need to be shaken out of it occasionally to wake me up again to what and WHY I'm doing things.

I get caught in this pretty frequently--doing something because I should do something rather than for God's glory. Which is why it's great to have these little reminders from people like you. Thanks!
Amen, Lisa. We should do everything to the glory of God. If it can't be done to the glory of God we need to question if we should be doing it. Thank you for this reminder.
Blessings,
Charlotte
