Five favorites from Romans 8:1-2

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1-2

Since we’ve started memorizing Romans 8 this week, I’m seeing it everywhere.mumsLike in my flowers.

The cold weather the past few nights has divided them into two distinct groups: the ones that will live despite the chilly temperatures, and the ones now dead.  impatiensIsn’t one distinguishing mark of a believer that he lives on despite all else? Sounds like Romans 8 to me.

Here are five things I’ve loved from Romans 8:1-2 this week.

1.  No
In Christ, we aren’t just forgiven a little, for just a few minor things. We are so forgiven that we have NO guilty verdicts held against us. None. Zero.

Combined with “condemnation,” I love to hear the word “no”!

2. Now
I also love the time factor that Paul adds in verse 1. Our deliverance isn’t just for the future. It’s for our present!

We don’t have to wait for it. It’s immediate.

3. Spirit of life
One of my favorite Greek words is pneuma for Spirit. It means “breath,” or a “current” of air. Combine that with the Greek word here for life, zoe, an “absolute fullness of life” and we see quite the gift we’re receiving.

A full breath of life. Breathe deep!

4. Sin and death
In sharp contrast to Spirit is sin. And in contrast to life is death. We are no longer ruled by sin, no longer ruled by death. While we still see them both, neither are our master.

Because...

5. Free in Christ Jesus
Both verses 1 and 2 remind us why these beautiful truths are ours: because we are in Christ Jesus. Only in him are we free, not condemned, now, breathing deeply, and free from sin and death.

Two short verses, but a deep well of blessing.

If you’re straddling the fence about memorizing, may I nudge you over to this side? It’s not too late to join us on Romans 8!Hiding-Romans-8

I love this! I love all these points, but #2 and #3 hit me this morning, Yes, we wait expectantly of the hope to come, but He graciously gives us a taste of it now, including getting rid of condemnation!

Oh, and to breathe in that full breath of life. Beautiful, Lisa!

It's like a refreshing drink of water reading your post.
Others may try to condemn but He doesn't. Praise God!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! Makes it even easier to memorize the verses with these images in my head.
That was a great lesson. You summed that verse up quite well. My youngest daughter has to memorize Bible verses every week. This is the first year she hasn't really relied on me to try to memorize her verse before her, which always inspired her to beat me... She usually did...
I miss it. Although the verses I now study I'm able to recall the book, chapter, and verse more than I use to.

Love this post! I was struck this week by the repetition of "in Christ Jesus" as well.

Lisa, Thank you for sharing, As apart of the Rom 8 group, this morning, I spent time working on the memorization, I underlined the very same words that you focused on in this post. I am in Love with the Word, the Word that became flesh, that is. JESUS, He is Alive, He lives in my heart, He revives me, cleanses me, makes me whole and breathes life into me by his spirit, without Him I am dead, the walking dead in me is there when I walk away from His presence and back to the law...that condemns me to death. His kindness leads me to repentance, What a sweet formula of grace..."Thank you CHRIST JESUS, for empowering me to walk in the spirit and being filled minute by minute, lifting me to a place where I can see clearly. Help me to run the race, abide in You, in Your will." amen

I love your overflow of praise of God's goodness. And your prayer too. I read it, then went back and prayed it out loud for myself as well. Thank you for sharing your heart and words here.

Lisa, this is awesome.

I never thought of my living vs dead plants as an illustration for Romans 8. As I take care of my flower boxes this week, I will be meditating on a true Believer living despite all else.

Your thoughts from Romans 8:1-2 are encouraging. Points 3 &4 have got my joy reeling. Thanks for sharing.
