Want to memorize Bible verses?

Hiding-Romans-8Ever have a scripture pop into your mind at just the right time?

Or wish that it would?

It can only happen if you learn it first.

While I did learn verses as a child, it’s only been the past decade that I’ve become more intentional about Bible memorization.

And in particular, chapter memorizations.

It sounds intimidating if you’ve never done it.
But it’s not.

In fact, memorizing scriptures in their sequential order in a chapter often comes easier than learning single verses. The flow of thought can help you learn and retain better.

So this week I’m beginning to memorize Romans 8.
In community.

1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
2  For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:1-2

Katie at Do Not Depart has put together a workable schedule, just two or three verses a week (but no pressure to stick to this schedule; go at your own pace).

She’s also gathered resources to help us.

  • Schedule
  • Audio recordings
  • Computer wallpaper
  • Verse cards
  • First Letter cards
  • Facebook group
  • Twitter group

And over 100 women so far have joined in!

If you’d like to give this a try, check out the resources and start memorizing. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Living in Romans 8 the next few months is going to be good.
Hope to see you there!

What to do:

  • Leave a comment below or on Katie’s page. You’ll be added to the e-mail list.

I should look into this. I was going to do Colossians as mentioned on Ann Voskamp's blogi n January but just kept forgetting to get started (pitiful, huh?) I memorized a lot in my teens and 20s, but some of that is getting fuzzy, and I've always had a hard time with the references.

I wish I had memorized more back then, when my brain was fresher. ;-) But it's never too late; I'm finding that out now. I'll be glad to have you alongside me in this if you decide to do it.

This makes me smile. :-) And now we're Facebook friends too. I love all the connecting points.
I'll join y'all Lisa! We here these verses so often, I think Rom 8 is semi-memorized already. :)

Yea, Kim! Glad to have an "In Real Life" friend to be doing this with too. And yes, I'm banking on some verses coming a tad easier since a few of these are quoted often. :-)

This sounds like a wonderful idea Lisa! I might just join you ladies. I need to do a better job at memorizing and pondering His Word. Hallelujah!

Thanks Lisa!

OK - I think that this would be a good thing for me to get in on too! So I'm going to give it a shot. :) One question - is it OK to memorize the verses in NIV rather than ESV or does that mess things up? I thought about changing over the the ESV, but I think I have good bit of these verses 'embedded' already in my mind in the NIV so I'm trying to go a little easy on myself with what's more familiar. ;-)

Wonderful, Kay!

You can use any version you want to. The resources won't be as helpful in a different version, but you can either duplicate them on your own in NIV or go without. The main thing is repetition anyway.

I've heard these mostly in NIV too, so this will be a challenge to me but I'm going to bite the bullet and see if I can carve some new channels into my brain. ha.

Romans 8 was the first chapter I memorized. It took me a year, but it was life-changing. I'm working on Eph. 1 now, but having a hard time. I'm hanging in there though! I've enjoyed perusing your blog this morning. There is much here to challenge and encourage. Thank you!

I'm excited to hear this. I am praying that Romans 8 will be an avenue for many of us to inhale more of the Spirit into our lives.

Memorization doesn't always come easy to me either, but I know it's always worth it. May God bless you through your time with him in Ephesians 1!
