no, it’s not exactly like you want it
there’s somebody missing you want to be visible
there’s somebody extra you wish were absent
you don’t feel quite as good as you’d like to
and you’re hoping you don’t catch that cousin’s cough
the conversation has some low points
maybe you should have sat at the other table
your stomach hurts from pre-dinner snacking
topped by three specialty post-dinner desserts
it’s just not the same
as when
what year was perfect
none before
none after
none until we feast at the ultimate table
prepared by the ultimate Host
so you
give
thanks
anyway
for those gathered around that you can touch
for those elsewhere still touching you
be grateful for the body you have
and for the body you don’t have
bring your special voice to the table
and gratefully take turns with silence
say grace over the food you get to eat
and for the food you don’t have to
be thankful
for the differences
this year
like every year
there’s only one constant
one who never changes
it’s the Giver
every year thank Him

Friends,
I’m praying your day is blessed as you give thanks to Him.

The first of every holiday after my mom died was so hard. I kept remembering all that she brought to our lives; her laughter, her warmth, her good food. :)
Lisa, may you keep the memories alive but still enjoy these moments of celebration with your loved ones. Take time to go through your grieving and don't rush.
Blessings and love,
Debbie
My heart goes out to you. Wonderful thoughts here -- that nothing ever really remains the same except Him and His Word, that no celebration is perfect, yet there is much to give thanks for.
Beautiful post. It's the being thankful that is important today....and maybe the pumpkin pie.
