To remember, review

reviewDuring yesterday’s sermon, Jenna turned around and poked me. I knew why. I smiled.

The preacher was reading one of our verses (1 John 2:15-17). We memorized it together last year.

Jenna could probably still quote it word for word.
Me? Not so much.

I need more review.

How do you retain what you’ve already memorized? The only thing that works for me is to review it over and over and over

John Piper says he forgets most of the verses he memorizes. So what does he do about it?

The answer is, review. But don't try to do that with every verse you learn. You should be learning hundreds of Bible verses by heart, and forgetting 90% of them.

But then you get to them again and relearn them, and they are still with you because you learned them once.

Somehow they will function to get out into your life.

That makes me feel better.

I picked up this week’s memory verse (Isaiah 25:1) from my daily Bible reading this morning. I’ll spend a few weeks going over and over it, but honestly, I’ll probably forget it later.

But it will come up again in my review list.
And I’ll remember I once knew it.
And I’ll review it until I know it.
Again.

That works for me.

What I’m memorizing:
O Lord, I will honor and praise your name, for you are my God; you do such wonderful things! You planned them long ago, and now you have accomplished them, just as you said!
Isaiah 25:1 (LB)

Thank you for this post. If John Piper forgets his scripture memory, then I feel better about forgetting, too. I've got a review system, but when I was gone to camp for a couple weeks and tried to come back to my memory work, it wasn't so easy. I can't believe how quickly I forgot what I thought was memorized solidly.
