Does documenting distract?

text cartoonHave you ever missed out on your child’s performance in a play because you were watching it from behind an LCD monitor, trying to capture it on film?

Or ever been so intent on taking photos of the fun that you’ve missed out on the fun? Or ever think, “This would make a great Facebook status!” before this is even over?status updateI do love remembering with photos, and I love keeping up with status updates. They keep me connected with people and thoughts that matter to me. That’s good.

But I don’t want them to get in the way of living life. I don’t want to waste my “live” time because I’m so busy reporting about it. I don’t want to miss the moment because I’m so absorbed in documenting it.

I want to be fully present. In the now. It’s where the real action is.

And that will give me something to tweet about later.

When my children were growing up I always felt I missed Christmas day.
My husband didn't believe a man should help, so I did it all. Visitors came and went and food was cooked served and cleaned up after. Today I still do some of that but now I have grown up children and we all do it together. Lovely to meet you. God bless.

Dearest Lisa, I have just read your tips on Alzheimers..
May I add one more?
Music therapy. Play or sing songs your mother used to love...it will light up a response..Bless you.

Yes, that is a great tip. Thank you--as much as I love music myself, that should be the first on my list!

Now that my 15-yr-old is into taking pictures, I've let her take over much of that. :-)
Lovely to meet you, too.

What an interesting post. Yes, there are a lot of distractions out there. Seems like there are more all the time. I'm glad you got the lizard and I'm especially glad you chose to share with us on Spiritual Sundays.
Have a good week.

Sad but true. Technology has brought us many wonderful things, but it can also steal so much of our precious time, something we can never recover. Thanks for this gentle reminder.
