1. dobro
(n) [DOH-broh]
Definition—a brand of acoustic guitar commonly used in country music, usually played on the lap and having a raised bridge and a metal resonator cone that produces a tremulous, moaning sound
Use—“A large church in the city might add a jazz band and use the Internet for all its communication, while a church in rural Tennessee may add a dobro to the worship team and stick with a Sunday bulletin.”

2. Michaelmas
(n) [MIK-uhl-muhs]
Definition—(chiefly British) a festival celebrated on September 29 in honor of the archangel Michael
Use—“…that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week."

3. supercilious
(adj) [soo-per-SIL-ee-uhs]
Definition—haughtily disdainful or contemptuous, as a person or a facial expression
Use—“For, though elated by his rank, it did not render him supercilious; on the contrary, he was all attention to everybody.”

4. piquet
(n) [pi-KEY, -KET]
Definition—a card game played by two persons with a pack of 32 cards, the cards from deuces to sixes being excluded
Use—“Mr. Hurst and Mr. Bingley were at piquet, and Mrs. Hurst was observing their game.”

5. panegyric
(n) [pan-i-JIR-ik, -JAHY-rik]
Definition—(1) a lofty oration or writing in praise of a person or thing; eulogy, (2) formal or elaborate praise
Use—“When you told Mrs. Bennet this morning that if you ever resolved upon quitting Netherfield you should be gone in five minutes, you meant it to be a sort of panegyric, of compliment to yourself--and yet what is there so very laudable in a precipitance which must leave very necessary business undone, and can be of no real advantage to yourself or anyone else?”

I knew dobro only because I love blue grass music and one of my favorite bands has the top dobros player in it. Hope you're enjoying Pride and Prejudice, one of my favorite stories.
