“Forgotten God”—Book review

I have yet to meet anyone with too much Holy Spirit.
…Is it possible to get enough or even too much God?

Who do you know the least? Forgotten God by Francis Chan
God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit?

If you’re like most Christian believers, your answer is a resounding “Holy Spirit.”

Of the Trinity, He’s the least well-known or understood. That’s one reason Francis Chan wrote Forgotten God.

Know that even as you seek to understand the Spirit more, He is so much more and bigger than you will ever be able to grasp.

This is not an excuse to stop seeking to know Him, but don’t limit Him to what you can learn about Him.

The point is not to completely understand God but to worship Him. Let the very fact that you cannot know Him fully lead you to praise Him for His infiniteness and grandeur.

This book is an inspiring read (no pun intended) to make you think more about the Spirit’s work in your life. And to disturb you that your lack of awareness doesn’t disturb you enough.

It’s not the most extensive book out there on the Holy Spirit by a long shot, but it will encourage you to be more aware of Him and to hopefully dig deeper yourself into scripture to learn more.

Most churchgoers are content to find a bit of peace rather than a “peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Phil 4:7). We want just enough peace to survive the week (or perhaps even the day).

…But despite our inability to change ourselves in this way, to simply become more peaceful or joyful, we expend a great deal of effort trying. We focus on what God wants us to do and forget the kind of people He wants us to be.

Instead of mustering up more willpower, let’s focus our energies and time on asking for help from the One who has the power to change us. Let’s take the time to ask God to put the fruit of His Spirit into our lives. And let’s spend time with the One we want to be more like.

Francis Chan will probably still be better known for Crazy Love than Forgotten God, but both books are worth your reading time because they point you to something greater—Him.

Many people’s pursuit of miracles is greater than their pursuit of God.

God calls us to pursue Him, not what He might do for us or even in our midst.

…Miracles are never an end in themselves; they are always a means to point to and accomplish something greater.

Lisa, I read Francis Chan's book "Crazy Love" and in fact ...loved it.

I recently purchased this one but haven't gotten into it yet. I think I just might make some time to read it now. My desire is to live in that constant conscious awareness of His presence in my life. Thanks for the review.

Blessings and love,
Debbie

Debbie,
I loved "Crazy Love" too. I listened to the audiobook version, but I'd like to go back and really read it.
