I finished reading Recalling the Hope of Glory this week. Both of today’s words are from there. A very informative and uplifting book!
1. paean
(n) [PEE-uhn]
Definition—any song of praise, joy, or triumph
Use—“What John, or perhaps the early church, has done is combine Daniel 7:13, Zechariah 12:10, and Matthew 24:30 in a paean of praise.”
2. versicle
(n) [VUR-si-kuhl]
Definition—a short verse, usually from the Psalms, said or sung by the officiant, after which the congregation recites a response
Use—“Then the scroll was brought forth to be opened by the one who reveals the whole plan of God (Rev 5:1-7), more prayers were offered with praise psalms interspersed (5:8-10), followed by the congregational response with appropriate versicles concerning the worthiness of Christ (5:12).

I like the definition of paean. I especially love paeans when they are sung acapella (sung with no instruments-can't get the spelling right). I know I've cone across paean before but I think I confused it with peon. Thanks for the new word.

I love the sound of versicle - it sounds like a word a kid made up. That one would be fun to use.
