Look who’s 4 today!

4 candles

It’s my blog’s 4th birthday!

When I hit Publish for the very first time on 8/8/08, I had no idea of the adventure that was beginning.

Thankfully, God did.

In the past four years he’s brought me new friends, new insights, and new healing, all through a simple little blog.

I thank him for these gifts of grace.

And I thank you for your friendship. Oh, the places we’ve gone. I appreciate you hanging with me, more than you know!

Take the Pain

no_painDr. Laura Schlessinger in Stop Whining, Start Living (© 2008) says that most people underestimate their ability to face pain (p 7).

We think of ourselves as wimpier than we even are. One reason is because we're surrounded by advertising that encourages us to eliminate pain at its first sign. Don't live with it at any cost.

But as Dr. Laura points out, “sadness, fear, disappointment, embarrassment, loss, frustration, etc., are just a part of normal life, and need to be endured as a feeling, and appropriated with solutions, if possible.”

Is it really in our best interest to eradicate normal, but painful, parts of life?

I live with pain. Some physical, some emotional. I'd rather not.

But a little pain isn't an immediate reason to reach for the medicine cabinet. In fact, a little pain has life lessons—compassion for others, appreciation for when you have no pain, indication for a problem you need to address before it becomes bigger pain...

Aw, how sweet! Thank you, Elizabeth. I still read you, too (and look at your beautiful photos). Thanks for the encouragement you've been to me to step out in faith more.

Happy blog birthday! Crumbs turned 2 yesterday. No wonder you seem to have such a handle on this blogging thing. You have been doing it twice as long as I have (not to mention your gift for clear, orderly communication). The new friends have been my favorite part of blogging. The mental and creative challenge is satisfying but also stretching.

Congratulations!!!! I'm glad you have something lovely to celebrate in what could be a tough week of adjustments.

Happy blog birthday to you, too. I hope you won't be in the Terrible Two's. :-)

Making new friends this way has probably been the most wonderful surprise of this whole blog experiment thing. I had no idea! Glad I can count you as one of them.

Thanks for remembering me this week. I just got off the phone with both my girls cooking supper together at my older daughter's place. That makes me happy.

You always have such meaningful words, Selwyn. Thank YOU for being my friend--what a huge blessing you have been to make me feel so loved and to constantly point me to Jesus. I could ask for nothing more.

Happy Birthday Lisa's Notes! I am have been honored to come here. Every time I do I am encouraged. You have inspired me so many times. Your first post--- which I am reading for the first time today--- is actually very encouraging to my journey right now. Considering I am still pondering Larry Crabb's words, "Pain is my friend." Your blog helps me to see why "Pain" really is a friend. I used to deny any pain or hurts, stuffing them down deep. The last four years I have been digging and feeling some painful feelings for the first time. This last spring as I went through a horrible time of lies and accused of abuse (which I did not do), being fired, I felt the pain while it was happening to me for the first time instead of running from it. Pain has truly been my friend. Now I think I just wrote a whole blog post in your comments........... :) Maybe I should just copy and paste it into my blog. Thank you! I proud to call you friend.

Sweet Katie. To be one who says she's lived in denial, I see you as such an open, honest person, willing to be vulnerable despite the pain. The Lord must truly be developing that as a gift in you. And it blesses me and others.

Thank you for your willingness to share pieces of yourself that are painful. When I read the "Pain is my friend" quote on your blog, it gave me pause. You're good at making me pause! :-) I need to do that more often. Thanks for your friendship! I do treasure it.
Happy Blog Birthday. Thank you for all that you share x

This is the first year I've actually remembered my blog's birthday. :-) Took 4 years. Glad I wasn't so slow with my kids' birthdays. ha. Hope you have a great day, Beverley. I'm glad we're connected through Christ and the blogosphere.
Happy Blog Birthday! I don't remember when I first stated reading you, but I think we must have found each other through the Nightstand posts or maybe those and the Friday's Fave Fives.

I always appreciate the truths you pull from the books you read and the gracious and even artistic way you express yourself.

Ditto, Barbara. You've been such a faithful blogging friend. I always read your posts and I'm glad we have participated in many of the same memes. I learn much from you! (And because it was your blog's birthday this week, I remembered to check mine. Otherwise, I probably would have forgotten again. ha)
Yes I do blog. It has been a blessing and a challenge. I have met new friends, not really in person but I still call them my 'prayer partners' and friends. It is a wonderful way to push us out of our comfort zones.
Congratulations.
My own blog is almost three years old.

Yes, Sharon, I've found that blogging does push me out of my comfort zone, too. And yes, we can still call our online relationships real friendships, too. I've met a few of them in real life--they exist. :-) Such a blessing. Congrats on almost 3 years!

I am very, very glad that God connected us, Lynn! What a huge blessing you have been in my spiritual walk. I think about and pray for you far more often than I let you know, but please do know you are always close in my heart.

Been praying lately about your upcoming trip to Oregon. It will be here soon!

Happy blogiversary!

I've enjoyed making friends and meeting people I never would have met otherwise. It has been gratifying to be able to encourage others because of some of the hard things I've faced.
