Where’s the Spirit?

Is this your church on Sunday morning?

Hymns and praise choruses are sung, a sound doctrinal sermon is preached, our church services are timed and orchestrated perfectly.

Too often, however, there is little of the presence of God that produces awe, conviction of sin, overflowing joy, and life-transforming ministry.

We can easily settle for “church” instead of God.

And every succeeding generation shaped in that mold makes it harder for anyone to dare ask, “Where is the Lord?”

- JIM CYMBALA

ISpirit-Rising-by-Jim-Cymbalaf something seems missing from your church or from your own spiritual life, see if it’s the Spirit. He’s the most overlooked member of the Trinity.

So Jim Cymbala, pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle (wish I had visited there last month!) wrote Spirit Rising to encourage our watchfulness for the Spirit (also read Francis Chan’s Forgotten God; Chan wrote the forward to Spirit Rising).

I won’t say you’ll come away as an expert in the Holy Spirit after reading this book, but you should come away with a greater appreciation of your need for him.

Cymbala divides the book into three parts:

  • God’s agent on earth
  • When God’s Spirit moves
  • When we surrender to the Holy Spirit

Each section includes theological discussion and real-life experiences. I loved reading the stories by Roma, Diana, and Annes.

Cymbala notes the change in the apostle Peter before and after the Holy Spirit filled him.

With three and a half years of excellent discipleship under his belt, Peter learned the harsh truth we all have confronted — it’s one thing to know the Word, but it’s quite another to obey it.

Even the best discipleship training and spiritual accountability proved insufficient for Peter, because no outward teaching can compare to the inward power of the Holy Spirit.

If you need proof, look at Peter on the day of Pentecost when the Spirit was poured out. Though the political climate hadn’t changed from the time Jesus was arrested and crucified, Peter now preached boldly about the name of Jesus to massive crowds. This was a new Peter! He was filled with the Spirit.

...Jesus had been with Peter, but now the Spirit was in him.

That change by that indwelling is meant for us as well.

Christ’s plan was to replace “me” with “him” through the Spirit’s presence. That is a far more radical idea than starting to attend church more regularly or reading the Bible occasionally. It’s more of a “corporate takeover.”

Cymbala concludes Spirit Rising with a section entitled “Where do we go from here?”

Does the Spirit want to do everything we have read about or not?

If he doesn’t, then the Bible is a very misleading book.

If he does, then our seeking his help, strength, love, wisdom, and direction is not in vain.

Each time the Holy Spirit prompts us to move in a new direction, let’s obey immediately. This will help us develop a deeper sensitivity to his voice.

As believers in Jesus who want to actively fulfill God’s purpose in our lives, we can only do it with the Spirit’s power in us. I pray for us to have greater awareness to follow the Spirit’s leading, less timidity from our fear of failing, and more overflow of love for each other.

Amen! This has been a big reason I have not found a church to attend regularly. My spirit needs to be fed by the Spirit. Thank you for sharing your insights.

Indeed, our spirits do need regular doses of the Spirit. I know he is with us all the time, but it's still encouraging to be in environments where his presence is evident all around us too. Praying you find that right church community, Lynda; it can be a difficult journey but an illuminating one.

In that first scenario, sometimes the problem is with the church, sometimes with the listener. There have been times I've gone away from the service with nothing, heard others talk about how much they gleaned from the message, and I thought, "Where was I? Were we in the same service?" But either way, it's definitely a problem of not being in tune with the Spirit.

Some years back it seemed like the Spirit was emphasized more than Christ, and nowadays the pendulum has swung back the other way. He does tend to be overlooked, to our detriment.

You make a valid point that we need to look at ourselves to see if WE are the problem blocking the Spirit. And I'd say we need to do that first before we look outward.

It is interesting to watch the pendulum swing back and forth with different issues. Unfortunately there are certain heritages that I've never sen the Spirit get his full due, perhaps from fear of being considered overly emotional or charismatic (as Bekki points out below).

Great post! I love reading the older writers (especially R.A. Torrey) because they wrote about the Holy Spirit before they had to worry about their words being misinterpreted as Charismatic.

Excellent point. I've finally learned to more fully appreciate some of the Puritan writers--the heart issues they wrote about are just as pertinent today, but they didn't have the baggage that many of our denominations carry today.

Lisa--the gift and promise that Jesus gave when He left was that of the Holy Spirit. We must find someplace to drink him in--singing songs, hymns and spiritual songs, speaking in the language of the Heavenly. Places where there are like-minded believers worshipping in Spirit and Truth.
My husband and I are on that quest right now as we seek to stay filled up with Him--the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for bringing this up! God, bring your power~

Beautiful words to describe the process. I pray for you and your husband, as I pray for me and mine... Yes, Lord, bring your power and keep us filled up.

I am on the last few chapters of this Jim Cymbala book. I am really enjoying it and learning from it. I even used a quote from it for one of my "In Other Words Tuesday" posts and link-up.

I have had the opportunity of visiting the Brooklyn Tabernacle many times. Every visit back to NYC includes their Sunday service and it is well worth the subway ride from Manhattan. I've always felt so welcome; it is an experience that is so special.

You're the reason I got this book to start off with, Debbie! Thanks for recommending it. It was a just-right read for me. If I ever make it back to NYC, I'll definitely have to schedule in a Sunday service at the Brooklyn Tabernacle.

Keep that on your MUST DO list Lisa. You won't regret it.

I am going to get this book, Lisa...it sounds very interesting and Joel and I have been reading books on the Holy Spirit lately. My sister went to this church while in NYC a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

I hope you'll enjoy it if you end up getting it. I found it very easy to read and very engaging as well. Having so many actual experiences retold in it was a big plus to me too.

I so agree with you. I have Francis Chan's book on my Kindle. It will be the next one I read.

Excellent words....CONVICTING! listening to the words coming from my inner existence...rather than allowing the noise coming from my Outer existence to drown them out. yes, and I SO believe that it is not loud and shouting voices from the world trying to negate what the Spirit is prompting...as much as it is just the "white noise" of daily life and busy-ness that creates a hum just enough to cause the Spirit's speaking to blend in and not rise above....because I am not always "at attention"....or "in tune" (so to speak) to the correct frequency...It is like listening to a radio station that is not exactly on the right digital numbers to come in clearly. there is enough static that I can only catch parts of the song or message, so I miss the main point of the words... THIS is where I need to strive to> stay in tune...know that I have punched in to the right location every morning... that I am getting the FULL delivery loud and clear from my Spirit helper. amen - Thank you Lisa. You have made me think....AGAIN! {{{hugs and hugs}}} xo grateful

This sounds like a very good and important book. I asked my husband if he had it. He said he has other books by this author but not this one. I agree that the Holy Spirit has been overlooked too many times in our churches. Books like this can be very helpful. Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Charlotte
