Prepackaged

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 1:4

Hiding-John-1-buttonThe life comes prepackaged.
It’s in him. And it gives out light.

But not only is life in him, he is life (John 14:6).
And not only does he shine light, he is light (John 8:12).

The more I learn about Jesus, the more I learn he is things, not just about things.

He not only speaks words, he is the word (John 1:1).
He not only shows the way, he is the way (John 14:6).
On and on and on.

So why is this so hard to grasp?

A few years back I attempted to memorize part of John 1. I succeeded so-so. But not as well as I wanted to. So I’m returning. Back to the beginning, asking the Word—who was with God and who is God—to shine his light in my darkest corners, bringing to life all that is me, in him, and him in me.

Strike a match and the dark disappears.

The match has been lit. It’s him. The whole package: word, life, light. All you could want, all you could need. It’s Jesus—then, now, forever. He is.

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The LORD  is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Psalm 27:1

If you’d like to memorize John 1:1-14 too, it’s not too late to join us.

Words are the creation of God. He is the Word that goes beyond communication and His presence is what lit the world. Great point and perspective, I too struggle with it in my human flesh.

Huhhhhh.... the memorizing thing? Huhhhhh, yeah, I huh... Well you see...The truth is I'm still struggling to memorize John 11:35....

That memorizing thing? You've already done it more than you realize. John 11:35: some translator's gift for all the little girls and boys who struggle to memorize. :-)

"He is the Word that goes beyond communication and His presence is what lit the world." Love it. And now he's passed it on to us to keep it going. It's a miracle every day.

It's funny how words and scriptures we've heard our whole lives can continue to take on new meaning through the years. The Word truly is alive and well! Yes, unfathomable depths.

Lisa, I loved your observations that Jesus is the Word, the Life, and the Light. Great post! My favorite verse about Jesus being the Light is Revelation 21:23. Referring to the New Jerusalem, John writes, "The city had no need of the sun or the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light."
