As the story goes, the Roman sentry heard, saw, and smelled all of life crumbling around him. Vesuvius had erupted.

Yet he hadn’t been dismissed from his post.
So he stood.
Just stood.

Ahh, yes, Lisa, how true it is that to stand...just stand...requires us to be close to Him that shows us mercy and bestows grace upon us. Truly, we can do nothing apart from Him. Thank you for the Scripture to go with each way He helps us to stand!

I have come to appreciate the imagery of "just standing" more as I've gotten older. Sometimes standing is all we need to do; it keeps us from going backwards. And yes, it keeps us in position to receive his mercy. SO thankful he is faithful to provide!

I mentioned on Do Not Depart's site that the inspiration for the painting came from an excavated Roman soldier in full gear when they dug up Pompeii. It's quite remarkable, I agree.
