How to starve a soul

starving-child1. Stay busy
Leave no empty spaces. Just do it. Go. Run.

2. Keep it light
Skim relationship surfaces. Go no deeper than socially necessary.

3. Smile and wave
Keep the inside, inside. Your feelings are for you alone.

4. Seek pleasure
Avoid pain. Discard discipline. If it makes you happy, make it yours.

5. Make today everything
Tomorrow never comes. Live for today.

6. Work it
All depends on your achievements. Your efforts. Your goals.

7. You’re # 1
Take care of you. Feed you. Love you.

And when you awake hungry, malnourished, and empty,
slow down and
dig deep and
share fully and
live purposed and
look ahead and
accept grace and
love God.

He specializes in rescuing starved souls.

God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on.

...God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.
~ C. S. LEWIS, Mere Christianity

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
Psalm 34:8, 10

You are a precious friend, Dianna. You definitely have fed my soul in many ways. May the Lord bless your day.
So good. So often we do starve ourselves thinking I can do this alone. God is so gracious and patient. Thank you for this lesson.

I know I have done that often, thinking it all depends on ME to control a situation. How futile. I continue to learn that the best way is to lean hard into the Lord and trust his work. I’m trying hard to grasp that, to help me get over the general and specific anxieties of life. The Lord’s grace will always be sufficient. I know you pray hard over situations you can’t control too. May the Lord bless those prayers.

So true. This culture does this very well.

For sure this culture does know how to starve us. It’s easier to fill up on junk and have no stomach room leftover for God-stuff.

But reading your post on “Moses’ New Android,” I think their culture had its own ways of starving a soul too. How applicable!

so true. I was thinking about our own distractions without thinking about their distractions.
Excellent, excellent post.

1,2 and 3 (& sometimes 6). Guilty. Wonderful post from one who sometimes starves her own soul, and foolishly so.

I’m guilty of all of these at different times (I guess that’s why making the list came so easily to me!). I don’t know why we often forsake the true meal for the junk food, starving ourselves in the process. Thankful for his grace to always fill us back up.
This one certainly packs a punch. What a direct and powerful post, Lisa! Thank you.

You've nailed it here Lisa. Work, distract, indulge self, and repeat is surely the path to a starved soul. I've been reminded lately that Jesus promised he would go with us, and that needs to be enough for me each day. Instead I focus on the many things I want other than him and his presence.

That’s good, Ed; his promise to go with us needs to be enough. Being in his presence is what feeds us.
Great post, Lisa! Quick and right to the point, yet very profound.
By looking at both lists it is sad to see that so many people follow the recipe to starve their souls.

Very insightful post Lisa! To feed our soul, we need to be able to open up and I guess risk.
