Wondrous Words Wednesday @ BermudaOnion What new words have you learned this week?

1. bibelot
(n) [BIB-loh]

Definition—a small object of curiosity, beauty, or rarity

Use“We were to load the boat with his silver, his paintings, his bibelots, and if enough room, Lady Tobias, and set sail at once for England.”

(n) [FISH-oo]

Definition—a woman's triangular scarf of lightweight fabric, worn over the shoulders and crossed or tied in a loose knot at the breast

Use“I wish I looked more motherly—perhaps I should buy a fichu.”

3. pith
(n)

Definition—strength; vigor; mettle

Use“He asked me to remember that most of them had come to the meeting directly from a supper of turnip soup (with nary a bone in it to give pith).”

4. rotogravureRotogravure_PrintUnit
(n) [roh-tuh-gruh-VYOOR]

Definition—a photomechanical process by which pictures, typeset matter, etc., are printed from an intaglio copper cylinder

Use“Taped to the previously hidden panel was a full-page, full-length newspaper rotogravure portrait in sepia of the Duchess of Windsor, Mrs. Wallis Simpson as was.”

5. tractable
(adj) [TRAK-tuh-buhl]

Definition—easily managed or controlled; docile; yielding

Use“Are you absolutely certain you wouldn’t rather be married to someone more tractable than I?”

6. métier
(n) [MEY-tyey]

Definition—a field of work or other activity in which one has special ability or training; forte

Use“Not strength only, but a métier she had for making us forget where we were for a small while.”

Those are all great words! I'm so glad you included pith! I never knew what it meant, but when I think of a pith helmet, it fits! Thanks for playing along today!

I love the picture of the fichu. The lace is so beautiful. All your words are great this week. I really must read this book as I've heard so many good things about it.

I had forgotten that meaning of pith, and thought about the meaning that is synonymous with essential or main idea. I had also read the word fichu somewhere, but didn't look it up, so I am glad to learn what it is. :) Otherwise the rest of your words were new to me!
