Rest.
Work.
Mary.
Martha.
How do I keep company with You, Jesus, throughout my day?
I want to sit at Your feet.
I long to listen to Your teaching. Single-focused. No distractions.
But we must eat. There is work to do. Come with me, Lord.
Into the kitchen with the dishes. Talk with me as I wash.
On the couch with my daughter. Teach me to mother with grace.
In and out of the car on my errands. Show me who to notice.
The ebb and flow of my attention. The lines blur.
I see You. I don’t. I hear You. Not now.
The day slows. You bid me rest, with You, as You still the inner longing of my heart. The one thing that is necessary. It won’t be taken from me.
I participate in this friendship — my focus on Your essence. You settle my soul. I warm in Your presence. Time — no matter.
Rest.
Work.
Rest.
In Your presence. All.

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.
40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.”
41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Oh this was so beautiful-so poetic. It gave me a new perspective (now I just need to REMEMBER it throughout my days!) I converse with Him all day, but I don't make these unique connections. He created so different, didn't He? To all work in different ways for Him. May He bless you greatly for your heart for Him!
I read the book, "How to have a Mary heart in a Martha World". It was a great read. There is so much to learn from those few passages of scripture. Whether you are a Martha, or a Mary!
yes...and amen...
Thank you sister... for the reminder of the focus - for the rest, for the work, for ALL.
grace and peace,
aimee
I like your post. I feel the same way most days. I want to dedicate my first hours to Him and the chores and distractions call me away. Next thing I know my day is over and I did not spend that precious time with Him.
This was so helpful to me.

...must remember this! :)
The pots, they smiled to me and reminded me. As a mom, I can change the world with bubbles on my hands and dishes soaking in the sink. Prayers and praise shaking the nations as grubby dishes glisten with clean.
Thank you for sharing. You blessed my night.

As a dude, I don't think too often in terms of Mary / Martha... I just hope I get to be Lazarus some day! Have a great day!
