Mama’s advice

Mama's advice We’ve been reading through a book of memories my mom left behind. Our family is blessed that she’ll keep speaking through her writings even though she’s gone.

One question in the book is:

What advice about life do you want others to remember?

We loved my mom’s answers so much that we printed them in her funeral program on Saturday. I hear her voice clearly here:

1. Pray every day

2. Don’t expect too much from anybody

3. Realize everybody has weaknesses

4. Be a good listener

5. Use the talents you have and don’t feel guilty about the ones you don’t have

6. Be patient and compassionate

7. Don’t hold grudges

8. It’s okay to be wrong sometimes

9. Be the first to say, “I’m sorry”

10. Remember you are very precious to God

                                   ~ Jamie Coates

I need to take this advice more often. You, too?

Wow. What great advice--and how wonderful that your Mom should have completed a project like that for you to remember her with.

Oh Lisa -- I am so sorry, I had missed the fact that your mom had passed away this last week. This brings back all the feelings accompanying my mom's passing a few years ago, knowing that you are experiencing similar feelings this week. I remember thinking I would never be able to deal with the viewing and the funeral, but God gave grace for each. I know you're finding His grace sufficient for each moment, though difficult, and I know that though you're rejoicing in your Mom's being with her Savior, you'll miss her til you see her again.

What great advice she left you!

I am so sorry for your loss. What a precious gift your mother left for you. My mother didn't leave anything in writing, but in her last months, when she knew she was dying, I "interviewed" her several times about her memories, things she was proud of, regrets, what she looked forward to, and more. Those were really the best conversations I ever had with her, and I treasure the memories of those talks.

I hope you don't mind, but I'm copying it. This is great advice for all of us.
