What’s on your nightstand?—March

What's on Your Nightstand at _5 minutes for Books_ On the 4th Tuesday of each month, Jennifer asks, “What’s on your nightstand?”

Finished from February’s list
1. Getting Things Done
     by David Allen                                                         ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Yes, 5 stars. I don’t give them lightly. But this book got me moving on some things I’ve been stalling over, things I’ve been complaining “I don’t have time for …”

And it’s encouraged me to set things in place so I can more efficiently and consciously get things off my mind and put them wherever they need to go next.

2. Counterfeit Gods
     by Tim Keller                                                            ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
What have you turned into an idol? Even good things become idols if they’re placed higher than God. “We think that idols are bad things, but that is almost never the case. The greater the good, the more likely we are to expect that it can satisfy our deepest needs and hopes.” Keller covers personal idols, such as romantic love—financial prosperity, approval, success. And he pokes into our hidden idols—individual self-fulfillment, doctrinal accuracy, ministry success.

3. Sacred Pathways
     by Gary Thomas                                                       ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
I typically love Gary Thomas’ writing. And this book was good, but he’s spoiled me to expect even more profound things. Read it, though, if you’re looking for more varied ways to grow in your spirituality. He has many good suggestions and many wonderful insights into nine spiritual temperaments.

4. The 36-Hour Day
     by Nancy L. Mace and Peter V. Rabins                        ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
Not a book you’d read “for fun.” But a very helpful (and popular) book to learn more about Alzheimer’s. It comes recommended by physicians and the Alzheimer’s Association. It teaches you practical things about the disease itself and more importantly (to me) about how to best care for and continue loving someone with the disease.

March nightstand Continuing
5. The Happiness Project
     by Gretchen Rubin
The focus for March’s resolution is work. The corresponding goals from Gretchen’s blog have been:
          Week 9: Aim higher
Week 10: Enjoy the fun of failure
          Week 11: Ask for help
          Week 12: Beware of drift

6. Charity and Its Fruits
     by Jonathan Edwards
I’m on Lecture 7 of 16. We’re up to verses 4-5 of 1 Corinthians 13:
“…Charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly…”

7. Reliving the Passion
     by Walter Wangerin Jr.
Meditations on the Suffering, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus as Recorded in Mark
An excerpt from yesterday’s reading, The Twenty-Ninth Day, Monday:

…And they crucified him. It happened. Eternity entered time. They crossed at the cross.

We are altogether meaningless, except God touch us. God touched us here.

We fly into an infinity of hell, separated from life and from each other and from divinity forever, except God hold us. God holds us here.

8. 66 Love Letters
     by Larry Crabb
I’m on Love Letter Forty: Matthew.

Know that the story I tell is one great story of love. From Genesis through Malachi and now from Matthew to Revelation, I never change. I always love. I can do nothing less. I AM love.

Just started
9. A Hunger for God
     by John Piper
I’m reading this one on my Kindle, which is great, but I can’t tell what page I’m on. It’s a tad disconcerting to lose that visual placemarker. However, Kindle replaces it with Location #’s, and gives you a percentage graphic of where you are (I’m 33%). And I’m enjoying Piper’s message, by the way, as always!

Fasting gives glory to God when it is experienced as a gift from God aimed at knowing and enjoying more of God. God is glorified in us when we aim our behavior at being most satisfied in him.

We may do this by grateful eating or by grateful fasting. His gifts leave a hunger for him beyond themselves, and fasting from his gifts puts that hunger to the test.

10. Learning to Speak Alzheimer’s
     by Joanne Koenig Coste
Here are five areas she will cover:
#1: Make the physical environment work
#2: Know that communication remains possible
          #3: Focus on remaining skills
#4: Live in the patient’s world: Behavioral changes
          #5: Enrich the patient’s life

11. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
     by Mary Ann Shaffer
This one is for sheer pleasure!

Next up
12. Forgotten God
     by Francis Chan
I expect this one to be pleasurable, too, in a different kind of way.

That's a fantastic list! I'm wishing I can just add the whole lot to my own TBR list--Counterfeit gods, Sacred Pathways, A Hunger for God, Learning to Speak Alzheimer's...

Well, at least I won't have to add Forgotten God to my list--it's already on it! :-)

Oooh yay, Guernsey! =) Fun, fun!

Sounds like you are taking on the Happiness Project as it was designed - in real time. That's awesome!

As always - love looking at your Nightstand.

Wonderful little snippets! That Getting Things Done book does sound great (I think I said that when you mentioned it last month). Glad you liked it so much.

I have been seeing Guernsey on lists for some time now and need to read it.

The Alzheimer ones sound beneficial as well. My MIL doesn't have that but does have a degree of dementia.

Interesting list here, Lisa. I became intrigued by The Happiness Project when Jennifer reviewed it, so it's on my "someday" list. I also LOVED Guernsey, so I hope that one brings you some reading fun. :)
