“Closer to Love” – Then Sings My Soul Saturdays

Then Sings My Soul SaturdayEven though I’m in my 40’s, there’s still so much I don’t know. Even about my own past.

In my young adulthood, I loved the music of a certain artist who will remain unnamed (hint: as he formerly chose to do himself, for a period of time). He was then, and still is, musically gifted beyond normal. But I didn’t always get his lyrics.

My husband brought up one of his songs this morning and I realized once again how naive I was (am?). That song was really about THAT? Surely not. I googled the lyrics. So I see it now. Sigh.

I thank God for Christian radio and CDs for me to listen to these days, and for my kids to listen to. Some of those songs also have meanings I don’t get, but I’m banking that most of them are wholesome and encouraging.

This song by Mat Kearney, “Closer to Love,” is one of those songs that I probably don’t totally get, but maybe I’m close enough.

Two lines always catch my ear:

1. “I guess we’re all one phone call from our knees”
We all know that call. Or at least of it. It’s 3 a.m. The voice on the other end is tentative and says, “I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news.” Yuck.

2. “We'll still be singing this song, the one they can't take away”
I’m glad this line comes second. It’s redeeming grace for the first line.

It’s the way God handles us. He may allow trials in our lives, but he never takes himself out of the picture. He’s always there. We always have the choice to cry out to him in those trials.

That much I DO get. No matter how young or old I am.

Closer To Love
by Mat KearneyCloser to Love_Mat Kearney

She got the call today, one out of the grey
And when the smoke cleared, it took her breath away
She said she didn't believe 'it could happen to me'
I guess we're all one phone call from our knees
We're gonna get there soon

If every building falls, and all the stars fade
We'll still be singing this song, the one they can't take away
Gonna get there soon, she's gonna be there too
Cryin' in her room, prayin' "Lord come through"
We're gonna get there soon

(Chorus)
Oh it's your light; oh it's your way
You pull me out of the dark, just to shoulder the weight
Cryin' out now, from so far away
You pull me closer to love, closer to love

Meet me once again, down off Lake Michigan
Where we could feel the storm blowin'
Down with the wind
And don't apologize for all the tears you've cried
You've been way too strong now for all your life
I'm gonna get there soon, you're gonna be there too
Cryin' in your room, prayin' "Lord come through"
We're gonna get there soon

(Chorus)
Cause you are all that I've waited for all my life
(We're gonna get there)
You are all that I've waited for all my life
You pull me closer to love, closer to love
Pull me closer to love
You pull me closer to love
Closer to love, closer to love, closer to love
You pull me closer to love

WOW!!! Blessings Lisa...thanks for your transparency in admitting that you may not "get" what they're singing about. Thanks for visit both my songs at both my blogs, you are the first at Mission 4 Monday and you'll never know how much this meant to me!

Now, at first, when I clicked on your video, it went to You Tube & gave me a message that said it wasn't available in my country...weird??? So I came back to read the lyrics to comment. Then I tried a search for the song & listened to it.
Did not know the artist nor the song but I truly liked it! It was upbeat, and as I often do, I asked myself, does that sound Christian? Funny, how we (and I'm beyond you in age) think a song has to sound Christian...but as I listened I realized that his message certainly is and that's when you know that music & lyrics come in many different packages & styles. Now, don't get me wrong, Christian music, does not have to be just hymns or worship. This was refreshing!

And it was a pleasure to hear and also to get to visit you!

What a great song!

I too, like you, sometimes don't "get" the lyrics, but then, something happens in my life and those lyrics just happen to come to mind and just happen to make sense, and just happen to be exactly what I needed to hear.

I think God can use anything and I think sometimes he uses lyrics like he does scripture. You take it in and it plants itself in your heart and mind and, maybe you don't know it, but it has taken root and grows there...waiting to be plucked when the time is right.

I worship and connect with God best through music and I know that He has ministered to me strongest and deepest through this medium.

thanks for a great posting.

Have a great weekend!

That is a great song, I have heard on the radio around here several times.
And I have done that too with certain lyrics of certain songs, I hear them now and think oh, THAT is what they mean. Wow, so glad I didn't get it when I was younger. :)
